Jailed and fined for no fault of his

Friends, how many of you think this would have happened if this man held a European or American passport? You have F**king iris scanners, e-f**king-gate and a ton of other f***king crazy techno stuff and yet you jail a poor soul twice and make him pay a telephone bill inspite of never owning a phone.

How could you?
And you still have him on a blacklist!

Clearly nothing much has changed in the last 35 years...

...
But who cares? Foreigners can now buy property, we have shopping malls a plenty and many other attractions to mask these things.

talk about Dubai not having a chronological order of progression.

The worst thing is that the person was arrested and treated like a criminal for a civil offence(Assuming that the money was infact due, it was mean a civil offence at max; not a ciminal one!) I guess Etisalat is a strong contender of the most-hated company of UAE atleast, if not the world.

picture this .. u are standing out side you house or come home from some where or going some where very late at night.
the CID comes asks you for identification and puts you in a lock up for the night or 2 nights if its a thursday till some one comes and keeps a passport to get you out.
this has happened to me and a lot of people i know .
and they even take yor finger prints.
im not sure if this is still happenning but is its ok for the CID to pick up and lock up any one with out reason but just for suspicion ?

This was a big mistake and I cannot find an excuse for that. But on the other hand, worse than this case is happening in many places around the world ... remember Guantanamo? How many people are still there for years with not even an accusation? I was in the United States and I saw the story of a man who spent around 20 years in jail and then found to be innocent! What I'm trying to say is, don't think that such case only happens in UAE. It happens in so many other countries which are far more advanced in technology than UAE.

Fahad, this is not about USA or 'the West'. Is it ok if this happens here just because it happens also there? Don't we want UAE to be better? Don't we want it to tbe the best in the World?

I know a Local guy who keeps getting arrested every time he passes through the airport because someone with the same name has a case pending against them in Fujeirah. He has finally got an official letter to use when travelling but will not dare to use any other airport than Dubai. He knows his fate oh so well.

Oops...I guess I'm in the front row.

At the end of the article there is a personal statement by the author about how the police are not debt collectors. Right, they are not debt collectors, but the Police and Etisalat are both government owned institutions, and they work together everyday on so many levels.. This is typical intergovernmental cooperation, not strong arm bully tactics.

Publicity--that's how these things get corrected. We all know Dubai is somewhat sensitive about its image--more than other emirates. Thanks to Gulf News this story got out. I'm sure there are others that haven't. As bloggers we can blog about any other incidents like this that we know of. People can call Gulf News and the other outlets.

Someone could create a blog specifically for the purpose of publicizing such injustices.

I agree with bd, media is power. And this is certainly a platform.
If Baghdad Burning can be nominated for Blookers Prize covered by mainstream media, these things will too. Sooner or later they will surface and awareness can bring about the change.
