borders..

looking at a regional map today i noticed that between saudi arabia and the UAE the border was noted as undefined..

i was wondering how an undefined border is administered and how such status impacts daily life and local administration..

wishing you all a great week..

Some maps suggest one could walk from UAE to Qatar.

hey - thanks for the information..

how fascinating..

any idea why this is the case?

as a lawyer - i cant help wondering.. which law applies to crimes conducted in this "waste land"? could someone raise the defence of legality in the other jurisdiction backed by genuine ignorance of which state they were in?

Well - in the empty quarter those crimes would only be acts perpetrated by the odd stray camel, so there probably isn't too much to worry about.

Far more of a concern is the diagonal drilling going in the Saudi side of the Al Sheba/Shebeih/Zararah oil field.

Do you have more details on this SD?

The land between Saudi, UAE, Oman and Yemen is the Rub Al Khali or the wasteland. According to stats, there is no defining border line in this wasteland, as no one ever goes there accept for the odd stray camper or camel.

Though legend does say that the lost city of Ubar ruled the wasteland, but sank in the sands of time centuries ago.

I was working in “Shaybah oil field” last year (KSA side), on the well heads themselves, and there was a clear KSA – UAE border; an existing fence that has been renewed by UAE at that time. The fence was very close so that we could walk and touch it if we want.
Although I am not a petroleum engineer, but I can confirm that there was not any diagonal drilling across the borders. I am only talking about “Shaybah” oil field because I was physically there one day. I know nothing about other oil fields shared between UAE and KSA, but I am quite confident that there is not such thing between the two countries. By the way, there is a nice map for this area on Google Earth. The desert there is very different…

Hey Lirun -- no offence intended, but I just couldn't ignore the irony of your inquiry, knowing that you come from Israel, a country that still for the most part has no officially defined borders!

The boarder is now clear between SA and UAE. however the UAE disputing old boarder line which took place 1970 or so. here is the defacto map.
