The Atlantis Party.

Several times more fire works than the Beijing summer Olympics.
One hotel staffer in jail for leaking guests' list to the press.
Shortage of Champagne supply in the world.
Police, civil defence and emergency services on alert.

It’s the grand launch of Atlantis hotel.

One would wonder who’s in his right mind would spend 30 million dollars in the midst of a global recession just to inaugurate a hotel?

Go figure.

Some guests (expected):

Robert De Niro
Michael Jordan
Oprah Winfrey
Janet Jackson
Lindsay Lohan
Kylie Minogue
Tom Cruise
Ben Afflek
Denzil Washington
Richard Branson

In addition to the blatant waste of money, etc, they are pissing off the good people that have either bought or rented property in the Palm that "need to be home before 4" and who need proof that they live there if they do decide to come into the area after this "curfew". If I owned property or lived there, I would be major pissed off!

This is in the wake of one PR disaster after another starting with the fire, the bad management of the hotel check ins during the soft launch and Sammy the shark!

You'd think they would have invited a few of us bloggers so that we could give them some more positive publicity
;-)

You're right Seabee, but I wouldn’t be surprised if tomorrow one of our fellow bloggers (who are keeping silent right now) came back with full-fledged ‘positive’ review and photos of him/her rubbing shoulders with celebrates. ;)

I'm just interested in the fireworks display....some photo opportunities for me...apart from that it's a waste...and I wonder what happen to the rules on gays/lesbian in UAE...isn't Lohan coming with her girlfriend?? or is the Palm not part of UAE???

Anyone know what time they're going to launch the fireworks??

Stained, the Atlantis staff are tight-lipped about the time of the fire works. Or they don't really know anything about the schedule of events. I actually called them and got nada worth of information.

Fireworks are scheduled for 12.30am.

Lyndsey and Sam have separate rooms (but next to each other)

Imagine being next door to the biggest fireworks display ever, in a dh15m house and not being able to have a party to watch them!!

Nice traffic jam building on Soufuh road, signs placed properly: "Palm closed for public"

I'm watching the opening ceremony, something from a horror movie...
It starts with a taj mahal kind of music, then greogrian/church chants, then what sounds like Arabic music..

Very interesting indeed...
Disturbing sounds....

Kitch, tacky , excessive - a grin of 'celebs' (does anyone else really dislike that grinning self-publicist Branson?) you would be foolish to expect anything else from the Las Vegas lite of the Gulf?

@ Anon 08.58, well, you know, the world is like George Orwell's Animal Farm really. There are dogs ducks and horses. And then there are pigs.

@ Mr Deputy. Why good Sir, I for one admire Richard quite some, thank you very much! Sorry to disappoint, but I find it fascinating the way he started off in life and the odds he overcame as a school drop-out dyslexic to attain the corporate heights he has today. Granted, with a naughty boy attempt or two along the way, but hey... let he who never sinned cast the first stone!

I certainly wouldn't club the Sir with the likes of the Olsen or Chopra girls or even darling Tom for that matter (he did put up an appearance our lovely Tommyboy with the ingratiating smile, didn't he?)

He's of a different breed Sir R. And Miss O'Hara for one admires the bold adventurous spirit, the 'Screw it, let's do it!' attitude, and his beliefs, 'Don't waste time, have fun, love your family'. Amen!

Now, if only the dear boy would tame all that wild facial hair into a sexy stubble and overcome the mane of blond hair, why, we'd strip him of 20 years and let him play Rhett Butler we would!

A trip down memory lane for those who remember the apartheid era in South Africa. Partner of Atlantis, South African, Sol Kerzner first came into prominence in the 1980s when he built the sun city casino complex in South Africa during a time when the ANC was trying to overthrow the apartheid system. He paid millions of dollars to attract overseas artists like Rod Stewart and Elton John to break the cultural boycott placed on South africa in protest of Apartheid.

These two links will give a better idea of what happened at that time:
