Abu Dhabi Media Company, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, last year appointed former Daily Telegraph editor Martin Newland to launch The NationalNewland has said the newspaper will target high-income, English-speaking expatriats, as well as people from South Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The National will have far more resources at its disposal than most other newspapers in the world. Newland has hired 175 journalists, including 40 home news reporters and 25 foreign correspondents.
The National will be available in the UAE and on flights throughout the region from 20 April, but Newland has yet to say when it will be published in the other Gulf countries (MEED).
I thought the name was "The Nation".
ReplyDelete"The National" sounds weird.
Anyway, let's see if they can do better than the other PR mill that we currently have..
yes. i agree with you, but is their choice. ciao from romania.
ReplyDeleteShould spice things up nicely, no?
ReplyDeleteowned by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council
ReplyDeleteSo now we get a newspaper owned by the government. I can't wait for the critical investigative journalism!
Why not call it 'Pravda'?
.........maybe they can include in the online version The Secredubai.blogspot that is blocked in Dubai....you know "Regional Blogs" etc.
ReplyDeleteHats of the to the capital !
they promise to compete with Gulf News
ReplyDelete"....compete with Gulf News"
ReplyDeletehahaha! the bar's been set at rock bottom? whoo hoo! :)
Rosh: Rock bottom would have been trying to compete with Business 24/7.
ReplyDeleteGulf news or any other paper is still low though...
We need more independent non-government owned newspapers Arabic and English.
ReplyDeleteThose newspapers; however; show UAE concerns only. That means, no objecting the ban of a movie like brokeback mountain for example or any other similar silly stuff.
rosh - lol!
ReplyDeleteMore importantly, does anyone here actually read Khaleej Times? Doesn't seem so...most posts linked to a local paper are rarely to KJ...
I say bring it on, The National! I think it's cool and am looking forward to having a choice of 3, unless 7days also qualifies for a national paper.
Proud emirati,
ReplyDeleteI see Brokeback mountain touched a raw nerve with you.
et tu, i*maginate - a shill for the Abu Dhabi government??!!
ReplyDeleteThe National is a great name. I wish them the best luck!
