A consultant's notes

A friend just sent me the links below, which is a consultant (from Boston Consulting Group/BCG) writing about his time in Dubai. Please find the links below, along. It is nice to read an inside view from someone unable to pretend in this country...

I quite liked this quote summing up nicely the work of many consultants I have seen around here:

"In any case it fell to us to decide for ourselves what question we had been hired to answer, and as a matter of convenience, we elected to answer questions that we had already answered in the course of previous cases — no sense in doing new work when old work will do."

I think this 4-part article by the MIT grad is well-written--well crafted and insightful. Although his experience with Dubai and interpretation of it may not be everyone's he does a good job of painting a detailed image of the Dubai experience. He also qualifies his judgments by giving a detailed description of the perspective he is coming from.

I think some of us should try to do the same. Everybody's narrative is going to be different while all can still be valid.

What an incredibly honest and insightful piece. I have lived in the UAE for 11 years and almost every point he makes resonates with me. You can accuse him of seeing the glass half full but not of being inaccurate - If you don't agree I challenge you to pull out a single statement and refute it objectively. And what difference does it make if he is 22 or a MIT grad - would you agree with him if he was 42 yrs old and a Zayed University professor? Argue the points he raise if you so wish, but the minute you start belittling the person you are already accepting that you don't have a valid counter-point and the only way you can drown down the voice shouting "the emperor is naked" is by calling the person a foolish kid.

Recent MIT grad Meets Real Business World in a Foreign Country.

I still think he wrote this because he didn't make the grade. His hide was not thick enough.

Dubai is, above all, a business/trade center. In ten years time he will have a different view.
