Beach development is still happening...

I've been posting on my blog for a while about the beach development next to Burj Al Arab - the fence going up, then the press announcement of the development, then Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid's order for construction to stop.

I've also talked about the mysterious offshore work that didn't stop, as has NZM at M&J Adventures. She has some good photos of the work boats in action.
Yesterday morning an island had appeared out of the sea - this morning I took these photos from the sea wall around Umm Suqeim Fishing Port.

The fence has gone from around the beach sure enough, but the Boskalis dredging company's semi-permanent construction site offices are in place adjacent to the port, the dredgers are working and there is now an island which wasn't there three days ago.
I can't imagine that Sheikh Mohammed's order would not be obeyed, so what's going on?

And you really thought that they'd stop if a few foreigners whined

fake balushi, u think now ppl will read this? Well you did.

I'm just letting people know one of the things that's happening around Dubai.

The interesting question - and maybe with your intelligence and wisdom you have the answer - is how is this happening when Sheikh Mohammed told them to cancel it.

Perhaps HH merely told them to take down the fence so that people could use the beach until it was utterly eroded by construction?

I, too, doubted when I heard that the populace might actually have been listened to. Guess I've been here a long time.

Knew this would happen from the very beginning. As I predicted work will continue and they'll only close the beach at the very last second when they have to

nakheel, the real developer here, has apparently been told to modify plans to save the beach - the fishing port, however, is on the way out. unconfirmed rumours, of course...

This thread on Skyscrapercity.com has a project plan image towards the bottom of the first page. It says that the fishing port must remain, but who knows for sure!

anon@21.13, true, but that's an old render showing an original suggestion for the beach development. I can't believe it was seriously considered because it not only has offshore work but it comes across the beach and way back behind it - and that's where there are villas and Umm Suqeim park.

As far as I know the beach at the Jumereira Beach hotel has been silting up and the marina is being dredged every so often.
The new 'island' may actually be become a isolated breakwater which is exactly in the line of the longshore drift towards the hotel marina.

Seabee: This post reminds me of an (earlier) humorous yet true in every sense label, titled 'Life is a Beach'.

Getting back to this one, I can only imagine the damage to marine life, which divers like M & J amongst others, won't find amusing at all!

It will apparently be a small jetty/promenade type affair with shops, snack bars, toilets etc, a small section of the beach will be closed but most of it will stay open.
