The pace of change

Just over a decade or so ago, Channel 33 was allegedly taken off the air for a week for broadcasting an episode of Benny Hill by accident (the screens apparently went black after about fifteen minutes of titillating antics).

Now in 2005: Virgin Megastore City Centre proudly displays this poster:

i remember the good old days of CH33. that stupid falcon logo thing.
and hours upon hours of religious programming and prayer time.
ch33 peaked with mr.bean, and bold and the beautiful.

i wouldnt be so concerned with what they're selling at virgin but with what they're showing on onetv (the ch33 replacement); the sopranos, and family guy, both of which if you've seen you'd think should be physically banned in the UAE (as in you order it on amazon, and 2-3 weeks later you get a nice shiny "confiscation notice" instead of a nice new copy of the DVD you ordered (i dont know if they still do this, but they did last year)).

i'm getting quite addicted to this whole blogging thing, i find myself checking every 30 or so minutes for some new posts or comments to respond to. rather unhealthy.

Aha... so they don't actually come after you personally? Eg: if you order something that isn't allowed, they'll just confiscate it, end of story?

Incidentally what kind of DVDs have you had confiscated? Obviously pr0n would be, but any "normal" Hollywood films?

any package from amazon is/was taken aside and checked by hand.
never ordered pr0n, but movies that have been confiscated from me and some people i know have been striptease (not a porn), dirty dancing (not a porn), The piano teacher (has a picture of two people getting intamite on the cover), i think also chocolat or some other mushy movie that someone ordered. If you've seen striptease and dirty dancing you'll know that both of them have literally nothing to do with the title.
a lot of stuff with R-18 ratings doesnt get through, though interestingly nothing was done about mad max 1 or mad max 2, perhaps that picture of mel gibson all sweaty on the cover made them think it was gay porn, they prolly tried watching it.
Basically anything that looks provocative.
It seems that most/all amazon boxes are sent to the karama office, which means that i haven't ordered much from amazon recently, only really 6 months ago.
Also i discovered to my delight that even with my mothers driving license, that is inadequate to recover packages from karama post office, they require the ID of whoever it is registered to. and seeing as my dad was out of town at that time, they insisted he fax a copy of his license to them...
Long story short, i put a fight, and demanded to see the manager/top dog guy, and whinged and moaned in a very expat way, and they eventually gave in.
I hope they dont insist on going through my hard drives when i leave in a few days, 500 gb of hard drives, so many pirated movies and crap on there.
you can email amazon and say that it never arrived, and they'll send out another but most likely it will be taken away.

Spanking is good. I like. But I saw "Mind your language" in there the other day which I am sure is 70's racism in the UK, and ethnic Brits too offense then. Im sure that wouldnt go down well over here, but it is still sold.

por favor.

Yes - I was amazed to see it here, I had never heard of it before. I'm fairly certain it hasn't been on UK TV in my lifetime. I believe it's most popular with the ethnic minorities parodied (presumably kindly, being the BBC?) in it who are learning English and use BBC World Service and stuff. I've seen it in the video shop and Virgin, but I've never seen an episode.

Hmm...Well, The Sopranos and Family Guy do contain 'objectionable material' :D, but they're extremely entertaining as well, at least Family Guy. I love Mind Your Language as well..You could pick up the DVDs for a bargain at Carrefour a bit earlier.

I agree, it is funny, but there is a programme from the UK called goodness gracious me which was made by british indians (brindians), the same people that do the kumars at number 42, and this was banned, because people took offense. the parody in ggm was hilarious - and i love myl as well. you cant please everyone.
