It now all makes sense. A bail out two weeks ago and now the world's tallest building changes it name. Put the two together and it all makes sense. After 4 years of building that must be a very bitter pill to swallow.

Sh Mo is a humble man! Its a good gesture to rename it after Sh Kalifa. Yes it hurts and can't be digested, however I salute the Dubai ruler for this. Congratulations to him and all the best for Dubai's future.

anon 21:17: i pray for Shk Mo's health. a lesser man would not have been able to see this through.

In Arab culture, the man is always more important than the institution or the place. In fact, a man (let alone a leader) could epitomize a city or a country.

I'm not at all surprised.

How humiliating.

wow.

WOW.

@Hemlock. There is an official website you can leave these lovely notes on... Take some time off to polish that halo though.

Now, I wonder, in light of the previous post by TRN, what this means to the economy, except an explanation!

WOW.

WOW indeed. It's disheartening to say the least. More drama cometh?

Bible, Genesis 11:4 states that, "come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves".. problem is the tallest building in the world is USD10bn bailout funding high and owned by abu dhabi.. is the strong dubai based emirates airlines soon to be announced under the abu dhabi inc. umbrella of takeover investments soon too??

"a lesser man would not have been able to see this through..."

Do you think this was by choice?
What would a lesser man do? Pay $10billion? Or try to raise it from another entity - in exchange for what? Sulk, and not come for the inauguration? What? What?

Sometimes there is only one thing to do - unless, of course, you are a sycophant or a cynic.

Grin and bear it.

One'd love to know the actual story - is this a gesture in hope for writing off the bailout? Was this the price? Is it a carrot for borrowing more money?

And it's not even the older SZ. It's the current one. That is what makes it interesting. Next? Another little bit being named after the AD Crown Prince?

The advantage to Dubai in this is that there is no greater proof that it is backed by AD. It's an endorsement. It's Dubai style marketing. Only this time they did not hire a sports has-been. They looked closer home.

it would have been nice to know when the name change took place rather than waking up to 'grand opening of burj khalifa'

it's heavy enough that they can't move it to Abu-Dhabi... so is still the Dubai's pride

Anonymous said...

it's still a landmark in DUBAI ...

this blog was the best one day, but not any more. most comments these days are full of haterit and non sense. those negative remarks about naming it Burj Khalifa is non of anybodies business except H.H Shk. Mohamad Bin rashid almaktom and him alone. and he didn't namedit after any expat or somthing will degard dxd he named it after H.H the Presedint of the UAE. so, fore all those whow are trying to make anegative issue out of it i suggest you use your brain and say something valuable to the readers of this blog.
respect to all bosative comments.

Garish and silly -- roughly the equivalent of buying a low license plate number.

Rumour making rounds: A new megatower will be announced in a few years called the Burj Maktoum merging plans from Nakheel Tower and older Burj Dubai plans.

Ha, ha, ha – the “selling their identity” was a priceless comment! (Anon 08:42)
Upps and I thought it was a “national identity” campaign.

How about “Burj - no we can’t” (as in we cannot do it ourselves, but need to import our achievements and thereafter live in absolute ignorance and denial that maybe we should have invested this money in our education - of nationals that is, not of foreigners?)

Abu Dhabi bought naming rights. Surely a better use of those rights would have been to name it Burj Zayed.
