The thing I don't get is, why are the common social problems exaggerated sooo much for Dubai when the simple answer to all that is materialism....you are allowed to violate the Islamic values in the shadows if you're adding $$$ to the countries economy but don't do the same in public which some people have found out the wrong way....doesn't the same thing apply to every country in this world...
Anyway I wish the government of Dubai would choose a side and stick to it cause hanging in the middle sucks...
The only issue is the situation of the laborers....saddening but every country goes through a shameful period, this construction boom is Dubai's period of shame.....
Prostitutes, disagreement with local laws, social injustices can be found in all cities and countries. These "reporters" are jumping on the Dubai-bashing bandwagon and just sticking in common problems to the Dubai framework, making it look like these problems are non-existent elsewhere.
Plus I felt like the whole article was stuffed with purple prose. Some of the sentences just made me laugh...I mean he managed to stuff so many adjectives into one sentence... what skill.
Dubai isn't perfect. No place is. Otherwise it'd be Utopia. No one will deny that there are problems. But...the Dubai bashing is getting old is all. *yawn*
Must read the spoof all over again...that was fun.
I think these Dubai articles have a common pattern. They are not focused on delivirng criticism as much as defining Dubai as a bad place. It is, essentialy, a PR compaign as well, but for the opposite objective.
However, PR or anti-PR, the workers' rights issue should particularly be addressed seriously and effectively by new regulations or we all be hypocrates.

I read a first few paragraphs ... same old rant.
I believe what was written can be said more or less to any modern city.

If it's so retarded here why are YOU HERE?
If UAE is retarded...then I can name a lot of other countries that are retarded in their own ways... :)
trailing the dubai-bashing bandwagon - a year late...
let's look at the headline:
sordid, reality, gilded, facade - all words which have been used a gazillion times to describe dubai.
the headline is trite, unimaginative and cliched. i'm bored already.
wouldnt give it my time of day.
