Dubai: Mid – Western Culture

Lets consider this, a boy/girl (Middle Eastern) from a family background where dating is a concept unknown. Where marriages are mostly arranged. Where having friends of the opposite gender seems like a big deal. Where society plays a really important role in controlling your behavior, life and actions. .... more...

For those who are born and bred in a city that has a cosmopolitan environment, that diversification inscribes in them as one single culture. They are raised with tolerance and hence, respect. For those who migrate later on in lives, when they're sensible enough to differentiate their values, traditions and general behaviour from those of others, adapting to a cocktail of different cultures can be quite tricky for several reasons.

Westernized...hmmm I guess the problem is the Emiratis interpretation of that word v.s the western's interpretation...
Anyways..I don't know who you have been talking to or mixing with, I am an Emirati and have a big circle of Emirati friends and they don't deny the points you mentioned (gay, lesbian relationships or extra marital relatioship) however they do frown upon it, I guess that has nothing to do with being westernised...
Sometimes we talk about being westernised as a good thing...I'm not so sure...

Hmmmm - I have to agree with Hot Lemon& Honey; I have loads of friends in the UAE (Emirati's and expats) and most if not all are not oblivious to the West & it's ways of life? It's just how most folks perceive and react.

Some (or most) of the west is accepted. I could go on and on, about this topic - however, but time's short at my end.

However, I will say this - I believe, growing up in the UAE, an individual gets a healthy blend of the East & the West. The exposures to both sides seems just right and sorta balanced? This I think originates , often from being brought up with rather sufficient freedom and not too much exposure to the unwanted. Ofcourse there are shortcomings, however, from where I stand today, and whilst I deal with friends, who've had a complete western or eastern upbringing, I see myself at an advantage.

More late..... sorry...gotta rush.
