This posted on Expatwoman this morning . . . .
I posted a thread the other day about mywebcalls.com over DIC. I spent a day backwards and forwards with their support team and they finally confirmed that it had been blocked by DIC and they had received a number of complaints from other UAE customers the same day. They (DIC) say they don't block sites, but they still do............................ MSN voice is the other one we have talked about on this site before as well that also doesn't work anymore. SIGH ! Whatever will they block next?!!
A serious development if true. Can anyone on DIC confirm?

I'll be in Media City later so I'll check. If it's true, I'll see what I can do to get it some actual news coverage, because it's totally against the free zone free internet ethos. I have some media associates who would almost certainly take it up, and maybe get it published overseas as well.
Apparently Skype blocked from TECOM (free zone and Emaar rsidential) - not just the URL but also the program.
i just got off the phone with TECOM/DIC Support..
they're saying Skype is not working due to a technical problem outside TECOM/DIC (which doesn't make sense to me from a technical standpoint).
they promised that it should be "fixed" by the end of Today.
on another note, i noticed VOIP connectivity over standard UDP/TCP port 5060 is not working either, and asked whether TECOM is blocking that.
i'm awaiting their confirmation which i should get any time now.
Confirmation would be really good so unfounded rumors don't spread. But it would be an outrage if the rumors are true. DIC with blocked sites would become a joke.
I'm outside the freezones, and used to be able to use it, but it has been very bitty for the last 3 days, so I suspect a problem outside of tecom.
BD: Confirmation would be good, because there is/was definitely a problem in DIC yesterday, as this letter in 7 Days this morning confirms.
Another slightly different story from a poster on Expatwoman this morning, according to a DIC technician . . . .
DIC get their bandwith through Etisalat. DIC are NOT blocking anything directly - it appears something happened 2 nightsago and they think that Etisalat by accident have blocked the DIC's access - they notified them this morning of their thought and hope it should all be working by tomorrow.
However, this morning I can't log into Skype in Etisalad-land, although it worked fine yesterday. Are they working on those undersea cables again? Or have they finally blocked the use of VoIP as threatened? As usual "the authorities" are silent.
An official Circular was released by TECOM today morning on the subject:
