Burj Khalifa - Pictures

Hi guys.. mabrook to the whole of the UAE on the opening of Burj Khalifa yesterday.

I took some pictures from the outside and inside of the tower if anyone is interested:

Enjoy!

PS: Pics are no where near as good as Stained's pics!

Burj Khalifa

I don't care why the name changed....I don't even care what people think happened. All that matters is I'm proud of Sheikh Mohammed and I'm proud to live in this wonderful country....and a name change is not going to change that.... :)

Anyway thought I'd share a shot I took today at the inauguration....

Dubai Fortune Index

Isn’t it remarkable how the architects SOM effortlessly managed to capture Dubai’s fortunes in the shape of the Burj itself? The building resembles a graph starting sometime in the early Noughties shortly before common sense took leave of absence from the world and this region especially, reaching levels of hubris many didn’t know were possible (or cared to know), before plunging to unknown depths of debts and egg in the face.

Nobody says it better than this Times columnist. “The edifice complex” - recommended reading for aspiring visionaries at Keystage 1 Level.

Thought I'd compliment the post below with a good picture. Even though this is a month old picture, but it shows the height of the Burj Dubai. :)

Mile High Tower to Surpass the Deathspire?

Maybe, if Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal gets his way:
Kingdom Holding Company, controlled by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, plans to invite contractors to submit bids before July to build the world's tallest tower in Saudi Arabia, reported our sister publication Meed. The Mile High Tower, which could reach 1,600 metres in height, is to be built in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah and may cost up to $10bn. The Mile High tower could be twice as tall as the Burj Dubai, Meed said.

The Burj Dubai is Amazing!

Not only will the Burj "become the world's tallest tower on 21st July 2007", it will reduce the distance from Dubai to Al Ain:
On a clear day: The tip of the spire can be seen by a person 95 km (60 miles) away.
A person in the Observation Deck can see as far away as 80 km (50 miles), which is more than twice the distance from Dubai to Al Ain.
(The above viewing distances are based on calculations that include the earth’s curvature)

Burj Dubai Sweepstake

Just for fun, I am running a little competition to guess the height of the Burj Dubai.

Go here if you would like to take part. The winner - which I guess we won't know for another year or so - gets a US$100 Amazon voucher. It's free to enter so it's not gambling or anything.

Good luck! Remember it's first come first served - you can't pick the same number that anyone else already has.

Burj Dubai Towers With Storeys

Burj Dubai, already the tallest structure in the Middle East and Europe, has set a new global record for having more floors than any other building in the world.

Currently at 120 storeys and 422.5 metres high, the iconic building developed by Emaar Properties is also one of the five tallest structures in the world.

Height-wise, the tower is now taller than the Empire State Building (381 metres) in New York City and the John Hancock Centre (344 metres) in Chicago – two of only five completed buildings in the world that have 100 storeys or more.

Burj Dubai skyscraper under construction here reached its 100th story on Tuesday

Jim Krane of AP:
The Burj Dubai skyscraper under construction here reached its 100th story on Tuesday, nearly two-thirds of the way in its relentless climb to become the world's tallest building.

With 3,000 laborers adding a new floor nearly every three days, the $1 billion spire is days away from surpassing a neighboring skyscraper that is currently the tallest in the Middle East, Dubai-based developer Emaar Properties said.
. . .
The Middle East previously held the record of the earth's tallest structure for about 43 centuries. Built around 2500 B.C., Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza dwarfed the competition at about 481 feet until 1889 when the Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris at a height of 1,023 feet, including the flag pole.
