Lightning is an atmospheric discharge of electricity usually accompanied by thunder, which typically occurs during thunderstorms, and sometimes during volcanic eruptions or dust storms.[1] In the atmospheric electrical discharge, a leader of a bolt of lightning can travel at speeds of 60,000 m/s (220,000 km/h), and can reach temperatures approaching 30,000 °C (54,000 °F), hot enough to fuse silica sand into glass channels known as fulgurites which are normally hollow and can extend some distance into the ground.[2][3] There are some 16 million lightning storms in the world every year

Yes, and now there has been 1 here in the uae. :-) And like the rain here, too. It rains 145+ trillion times in the world every year. But it rains only once a year here if we're lucky. :-)
And the hail! Im sure there are 500K hail storms each year. But, as far back as iI can remember, it's never hailed in Dubai. In Fujairah, and RAK, but not Dubai.
Weird thing about these freak storms... I was driving back to AD from Sharjah, and the bad stuff started happening 10 minutes after a crossed into Dubai, and I kid you not, the second I got to the AD-Dubai border it just stopped.
UPDATE Friday, 27/03/09, 8:35a.m.: Weather: for Day 2: No unusual winds, rain, (hail), lightning, or electrical storms of any kind last night (Thursday night) in Al Ain.
My UPDATE above is in reference to various newspaper reports saying that we would have 4 more days (after that initial strange-Weather day on Wednesday [when I got the electrical storm video]) of bad weather throughout the UAE.
As of right now though (Friday, Day 3 of the 4, at 5:00p.m.) only occasional strong winds are occurring in Al Ain.

It did hail in Dubai - it was when I was in 5th grade, so I'm guessing that was 95-96. Never saw it 'cos i was in class :(
I would have also been in class then.

I'm assuming this was the end of our freak weather, because I just washed my SS, and tomorrow the Hemi needs new coats of polish and wax.
God I hate the wind and sand and dust. Guh.
UPDATE: (click here for) sights and sounds of raining in Al Ain now, Saturday, Day 4.
And it's raining this morning as well, Sunday morning!
