As people may remember, Etisalat recently gave a free upgrade to Al Shamil broadband users.
Now I've turned my modem on and off, as instructed, and then I went to test things at:
Bandwidth Speed Test
My results on (what should now be) a 1mbps connection:
Communications 273.6 kilobits per second
Storage 33.4 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 30.7 seconds
Subjective rating Mediocre
To compare, I got a friend in Media City to take the test:
Communications 555.5 kilobits per second
Storage 67.8 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 15.1 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad
It would be interesting to see other people's results. The test is free and takes literally two-clicks and no more than 30 seconds (just remember to select that you're in the Middle East). Anyone who does it, please post your results below mentioning what speed you are supposed to have - 256/512/1mb/2mb - and whether you're in Tecom or outside.

(on the shamil Modem, haven't done the swtich-off swtich-on thing yet)
Communications 383 kilobits per second
Storage 46.8 kilobytes per second

ok switched off and back on again and jeez it's bloody awful
Communications 131.1 kilobits per second

1MB file download 1.1 minutes
Subjective rating Mediocre
Communications 611 kilobits per second
Storage 74.6 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 13.7 seconds

Yikes! Beating the pants off everyone here and it's still lousy. And how do Etisalat expect to be able to double everyone's bandwidth overnight when they've got cables snapping all over the place and everyone now knows how dodgy their connectivity is?
Communications 810.1 kilobits per second
Storage 98.9 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 10.4 seconds
Subjective rating Good
A couple of hours after the previous test, I get what you see above, scraping into the 'good' category! But when I connect to Blogger.com or pretty much any other site, it takes a long time to download, images are missing, stylesheets are stuffed. Somefink weird going on here.
Like I mentioned in my blog, this so called upgrade is not going to make any difference.
Anyways, I just took the test for the line in my office. We have a 2 MB leased line here:
Communications 303.6
Storage 37.1 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 27.6 seconds
Subjective rating Not Bad
Not sure how this happened, but :
799.3 kilobits per second
Communications 799.3 kilobits per second
Storage 97.6 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 10.5 seconds
Subjective rating Good
Mine seem to have improved:
675.1 kilobits per second
Communications 675.1 kilobits per second
Storage 82.4 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 12.4 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad
Still a bit jealous of snow white's though ;)
i switched off and back on again but no difference
Communications 122.1 kilobits per second
Storage 21 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 39.9 seconds
Subjective rating Mediocre
Just switched off and switched back on again and it seems to have improved:
Communications 652.4 kilobits per second
Storage 79.6 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 12.9 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad
Its supposed to be a 1 Mbps connection (or at least thats what the ecompany greeting card said) so I'll try back in a couple of hours like keefieboy and see if get a couple of hundred kilobits more
