Ajman to regulate alcohol sales

according to gulf news...

"Ajman: Residents will need a liquor licence to buy alcohol in the emirate from now on, Gulf News has learnt.

Previously anyone could buy any amount of alcohol in Ajman but soon only non-Muslim Ajman residents over 21 years with a liquor licence will be able to do so.

Liquor licences will be issued to residents with a valid residence visa from the police department.

Sources told Gulf News the authorities aim to regulate the sale of alcohol.

"People must be non-Muslims, aged over 21 years and must show their liquor licence to buy alcohol," a source said."

I'll take weekend drives to Barracuda and the one in Hatta, as opposed to Ajman, anytime.

Besides, both Barracuda and Hatta have a wine cellar.

Now that's even cooler :)

I miss the wine cellar at Barracuda. It's been awhile since I've made a trip there. At least 6 months! I'm not a devout drinker :)

It's a shame though. Luckily for me, my non-Muslim wife has a liquor license. I knew interracial marriage would have its benefits! Though, it does mean that it will probably be more expensive.

....hmmmm, now is the turn of Etisalat or du to block the blog.......but wait, even they won't buy it.....before all: what are this knowledgeable liquor buyers doing behind their PS's on Thursday night ;-)...

Darn! now my Muslim (both local/non-local) friends are going to sneak out the brandy & wine my mom uses to bake her famous Christmas cakes. Ah! just like good 'ol times :) Plus am gonna have to make extra trips to AJ, just for my friends :)

You know bottom line, they can ban/block all they want - people have always found an alternative.

.....though I do wonder if the "pressure" came from SHJ/KSA?

Good decision.

It was bound to happen, sooner or later. Surprised it took this long actually : /

You mean the booze or the marriage?
:)

Rosh, from what I’ve been told, the KSA influence on SHJ will expire this year-end, which may result in SHJ stacking up on their own wholesale & retail stock ;)

Good decision !! I hope they ban it all though :)

rosh, that is a naive assumption, the Sharjah and KSA thing. I've been hearing it for sometime. It didn't make sense before and it doesn't make sense now. Even Sharjah is not influenced by KSA.

This reminds me of the only thing many Emiratis from Sharjah can tease us for. They always blabber on how clean Sharjah is comparing to Dubai.

PE, alcohol was once sold in Sharjah, requiring a licence. It's well established within social circles here in Sharjah that KSA had backed and financially supported Sharjah to go through this implementation.

There's nothing to be ashamed about it, at least judging from your values and beliefs.

Sorry, let me clarify, implementation of banning the sale of alcohol. Not the other way round : )

^^ Nadim, I've heard about the conspiracy some expatriates say about Saudi Arabia putting pressure on Sharjah and it still doesn't make sense.

Saying that KSA helped Sharjah is different though !!

"I've heard about the conspiracy some expatriates...."

What makes you say these are expat community conspiracy theories? I first heard about it years back from local friends in the know-how. It's quite well known for years that KSA was pumping money into cash-strapped Sharjah - with a purpose, that is to impose its Austere Wahhabi brand of Islam.

Proud Emirati said...

^^ Because I only read about it on the net by expatriates. Maybe Saudi Arabia helped Sharjah (which is not well known as you claim and I never heard of it either btw) but there would never be pressure.I still believe that it doesn't make sense. The only relation I see between Sharjah and Saudi Arabia is on individual level with Saudis loving Sharjah so much. Even the diplomatic relation between Dubai and KSA is way better than it is with Sharjah.

and btw, there is nothing called Wahabi brand/branch of whatever in islam. Most of the Emiratis would give u a dump face if you say this term here because it is never used. In the the UAE government curriculum in Islam subject there is a topic about Mohammed Abdul Wahab as a respected Muslim scholar. Nothing, more and nothing less, he didn't invent a branch of his own. So if Saudi Arabia is wahabi as you claim, then the UAE is defensibility a wahabi.

Wahabi is another term invented by others, not expatriates though :P

Am I the only one who thinks that PE is too young to know a lot of things? This is not criticism. But, seriously, how old are you?

rosh said...

PE: am not sure what to say. Either you and I've lived in different places or the locals we know have little in common? Over the years SHJ has come to resemble more of KSA - more so after 9/11. That said I think SHJ is fine, the powers that be try and strike a balance between KSA and DXB - I wish the corruption/red tappisim went away.

I realize/agree there isn't anything called Wahhabism in it's true sense - people use it more as a punchline (both locals and expats). Anyway here is something to read/clarify.

My theory is that the liquor traders moved into real estate and can't be bothered any longer with thebooze business.....
the government closed the business in order to save their faces!

worth noting that this comes around the same time as an announcement of a 220 billion dirham project in Ajman.

rosh said...

Well, guess, there goes the lovely AJ beachfront.

Rosh, am only saying that the ruler of Sharjah is the one who have the first and last say in his emirates.

1-0 on Wahabisim ;)

Yea, I guess me and the locals you know have little in common :P

Anonymous @ 02 May, 2008 22:34. I am an information freak but yea I don't know everything. Am not old but am not as young as samuraisam ;)

Proud Emarati doesnt know much. We emaratis are fimiliar with the term wahabi and have heared all the stuff you guys said here and there might be some truth to it

He must be living in cave or something

PE: it's true, Shaikh Sultan has the final say, and as someone who've lived in SHJ most of his life, I do believe he is a pragmatist when it comes to business and ways of life. In fact I do believe he played a vital part with Mohammed Bin Rashid in reaching a wide-ranging political pact, that ended one of the most complex territorial disputes in the UAE, back in '85. SHJ is a blend between ME and Western conservatism/ways of life. I've enjoyed growing up in SHJ.

"He must be living in cave or something"

LOL watever. It's always a giveaway with the omission of the word 'the'.

PE with respect I do read some of your comments but I think from now on I won't read them. You do have valid points but a lot of them are so strange I don't read them. I truly don't know anyone in reality who holds the same views as you. I am entitled to a view as you are.

Ciao and take care...
