Pakistan's President Musharraf announces resignation

This really sucks. Being an Indian, what happens in Pakistan really does not matter to me or affect me but I really believed Pervez Musharraf was the best thing that happening to Pakistan for a very long time (from my point of view). He was in the army so he did fight for his country and he did try to make Pakistan progress into the right direction. Now the country has been handed over to Nawaz Sharif who's main agenda seems like he wants to take revenge on Musharraf for what he did to him 8 years ago [plus he's a corrupt useless leader] and
Asif Ali Zardari who as most of us know is a crook.

true... PM was perhaps the best ruler pakistan had, but in the end he lost control of things and his actions backfired at him.

Most Indians are accustomed to Governments that (however corrupt or inept) come to power in periodic elections that, by and large, reflect the choice of the country's population, and are removed when they no longer command a majority in the country's parliament (or legislature in the case of the states).

Other than on one highly irregular occasion in 1975, this procedure has remained more or less sacrosanct throughout the nation's modern history. To even imagine that any one member of the country's military brass would step up, toss out the current Prime Minister and send him (or her) into exile (after extracting a solemn promise that he or she won't ever return) and then proceed to rule the country for as long as he thinks fit...would be...well, beyond anyone's capacity.

As you correctly said, it's none of our business and over the past 60 years Indians have generally regarded politics across the border with nothing more than a raised eyebrow.

Wow that's sad. I've been to Lahore - lovely, rich in culture city with much history. The place and it's people truly, deserve better.

. . . . its the full circle. mush (with all due respect) outsted nawaz 9 years back. . . . (i still remember the cnn coverage of that incident) and now 9 years later nawaz is back and his only agenda seems to be to get even with mush. . . .

. . . ofcourse during the 9 years in power mush had access to billions of $ of US aid. . . . so i guess he had got his retirement bonus already. . . .

. . . . but for the people of pakistan its like completing a full circle. . . .

. . . . nawaz . . . mush . . . . nawaz (add zardari). . . sad that no leader could come about in the past 9 years or so. . . .

. . . no offence meant to anyone.

You're an Indian and claim that Musharraf was the best thing to happen to Pakistan when there's overwhelming evidence to suggest that Musharraf was the mastermind behind Kargil and his ludicrous "autobiography" pinned blame not only for that war but every skirmish we've had since then solely on India's shoulders. Not only that but he's done so much to keep himself in power, dissolving parliament, installing a state of emergency. Ludicrous.

I'm glad to see that lying bastard's out, though I'm skeptical as to what will happen now.

hehe, as an Indian living in the region I am waiting for the inevitable name calling that will commence between Indians and Pakistanis over imagined slights.

I hope the situation improves in that country. oh by the way guys, lets not brag at our record. Shibu Soren expressing an interest in becoming CM. what ever next.

Make a couple of mistakes does not make a man BAD. I mean look who has Pakistan chose to lead Pakistan, they have a long list of being crooks then Mr. Musharraf. He is an honest man and all the public had to do is voice they concern and it would have changed, we never give Mr.Musharraf a chance to correct his mistakes and I am sure if he did everything would have been ok.

I guess all is lost for Pakistan, because I don't see and end to the troubles that are going to build up now.

i love how being indian qualifies this authour to criticise pakistan's president :)

surely your opinion is an opinion regardless of origins..

Nobody is criticizing anyone here. So what if the person is Indian and has spoken about some other country's leader? How many Brits or Arabs do you know that speak about the American leader (or another country's leader for that matter)? The whole world does.
Everybody talks politics. Everybody is entitled freedom of speech.

Whatever it may be, everyone has an opinion so no matter what you are Indian, Pakistani or American, you as a human being has the right to say whats on your mind.

I am a pakistani, but I admire India. They have taken they country to such levels its just amazing Bravo to India, I hope that Pakistan can follow.

Hi,

Sorry for being off topic, but I was wondering if someone could blog about the recent Saudi-sponsored Interfaith meet at Madrid, Spain. (Or has someone already blogged?) It is a rather pioneering move.

Here's one of the links from Gulf News website relating to the event:

I also came across this related news item:

(Definitely worth clicking, for information's sake.)

Aah yes -I can see the relevance to the UAE community blog:
Mr. Zardari, aka Mr. Ten percent, and his equally corrupt late wife were residents of Dubai. Equally, Musharraf may be welcomed to Dubai with open arms. It might juts be PR stunt by Emirates airlines to increase air traffic between Dubai and Islamabad, don't you see.

Pakistan thought it was screwed with Musharraf.
It will now understand what being screwed really means.
Yeh yeh Musharraf had his bad moments, nevertheless considering what the alternatives our at least he wasnt building huge mansions in Lahore or Sind.
Zardari's brat much like his grandfather and mother, doesnt speak much urdu, that should do tremendously well with a predominantly urdu speaking country.
Was this Mr.Jinnah's dream?

My reason to say I'm an Indian and still making this post was to highlight that whatever happens in that country does not affect me but I am still sorry to see Musharraf being made to resign. Just that. There is not other complicated reason.

I agree that he has done mistakes but unlike his replacement the country was still better off. Zardari and Sharif are crooks who deserve to be in jail and not running a country.

All I can say is that Can see only doom and gloom ahead for Pakistan.

Despite the fact that Musharaf appeared to have usurped power from a democratic govt., he turned around Pakistan from near disaster. You can see the economic indicators in the last few years.

Anonymous: At least he might be safe in Dubai... Look what happened to Benazir when she tried to leave.
Killed by an Emirati commando for generating bad Dubai PR.. (go conspiracy theory go..)

BB:

I think Musharaf is smarter than the Bhutto/Sharif clans. Rumor has it he'll opt for a retirement package in Turkey.

I'm adding your conspiracy theory to my own 'Why did the chicken cross the road?' series.

Bottom line is, a troubled Pakistan is of no good to anybody. (except Al Qaeda and Israel maybe?).. so let's hope things eventualy end up good for the Pakistani people.
