Doha Center for Media Freedom

The Doha Centre for Media Freedom, alarmed by recent talks between Dubai police and Google, has sent an open letter to the Internet giant warning it not to give in to calls for censorship.
Chief Inspector Dhahi Khalfan Tamim of Dubai police and Giselle Hescuk, Google's head of development for Europe and the Middle East, met in March to draw up a censorship plan which the UAE authorities said would maintain religious harmony and prevent any infringements of religious and ethnic integrity in the light of local culture and traditions.

The authorities officially asked Hescuk to "restrict content that is pornographic, mocks religions, strengthens atheism, promotes new religions, fosters a feeling of insecurity or is unsuitable for young children".

The Doha Centre said: "The measures put forward and the terms used are ambiguous enough to result in the strictest sort of censorship. The proposals are based on a list of 500 key words drawn up by the Dubai police which would block access to certain sites."

The Centre called on Google and its subsidiary YouTube to reject the proposals.
"A company with the slogan 'You can make money without doing evil' and which is the world Internet leader has a moral obligation to take a stand on freedom of speech and act accordingly", it said. "The greater the power, the greater the responsibilities."
The Centre added that it was particularly concerned because the list of banned words had not been made public.

"Blackmail by the Dubai authorities is unacceptable. The United Arab Emirates cannot make any form of censorship a condition of access to the Internet." Read more on their website.

I'd like to see those 500 words Dubai police wants google to block.

I wonder if they'll ever realize it's useless since thing like hotspot shield seems to bypass their proxy quite easily (and my VPN in US/europe/HK even better) and pointing your browser to google.com/ncr will give you the US version of google without "local search result optimization".

I assume that since they blocked 30% of all internet's picture with flickr pretty much everyone is using some kind of tool to circumvent the blockage... silly

What really makes me sad is that this behavior is not limited to the UAE but really seem to be happening everywhere. UK, Australia, Germany and others are also talking about implementing some degree of censorship while China has imposed it's iron rule on search engine like Google a long time ago.

Google is not a white knight of information freedom and you can be sure they'll just do whatever the UAE gov' wants.

Actually it can and has. What reality are these people living in?

I'm really really annoyed when organizations from beyond the UAE's borders stick their noses in business that isnt theirs.

Fine, the US, I've accepted, if we dont play nicely with them they'll bomb us. Iran... same thing, KSA... sort of the same thing...

But Qatar? Fix your own issues 1st.

Oh, BTW, before anyone even starts with the "blah blah people have a right blah blah" No, no they dont. Most (and Im talking over 60%) of the citizens of this country are FOR this type of restrictions. so if you are a "blah blah majority rule blah blah" person, keep your mouth shut. The majority DOES infact want this.

On a personal note. I'm too busy to be surfing the innerwebs for anything aside from work, or the chuckle I get from this and a few car sites. I dont care. For eevry blocked site, there are 3 offering the same exact content.

ABIT: Let me correct that for you...

"The majority of 10% of the population DOES infact want this."

In any case, I doubt your assumption that the majority do want these kind of restrictions; Dhahi is acting like people on youtube are forcibly throwing their opinions down people's throats, when in fact the only way you'd find such 'terrible' video's is if you searched for them/clicked on them and watched them for their entire duration and only THEN agreed with them. You could just as easily go find a book in any bookshop/library that has views different to yours and then read them, does he flip out over bookshops? No, he flips out over interactive satellite channels and over video. He doesn't seem to have a problem with any form of text on the internet either, I could just as easily go and read the same stuff that is on youtube. For example, the website for the Ku Klux Klan isn't blocked here

But then again, Dhahi continuously seems to want Etisalat to block YouTube when Etisalat has nothing to do with blocking websites anymore. So I'd take his campaign less than seriously.

I always thought there were more pressing issues for the police to attend to, like Chechen militants getting gunned down in parking lots, but perhaps I am wrong.

Sam, reread my comment:

CITIZENs. Non-citizens have No say in how govt affairs are dealt with.

Yu arent a citizen and dont like it, you can always leave. Simple. Sweet, true.

Oh trust me, 60% is me being veru conservative in my guesstimate.

the other 90% is MEANINGLESS. Pure and simple. Hired help. No more, no less. And have NO standing in govt issues.

It's like a house of 2 with 20 maids. Thats it. So get off yoru high horse and accept that. Accept that even if 99% of the population was not from here, the 1% is ALL THAT MATTERS in public policy.

ABIT,
"...if we don't play nicely with them they'll bomb us..."

You forgot something: if the UAE is attacked, the US will not only come to your aid, the US will fight the battle for you.

Secondly, regarding censorship, how about a healthy balance? To be sure, there's a lot of wretched, missable stuff on the internet here in the US, and it's too easily accessible (to my kids). But when I lived in Abu Dhabi I found many absolutely fine sites were blocked. What's wrong with a little healthy debate?

samuraisam said...

"the 1% is ALL THAT MATTERS in public policy."

I bet you can't explain why youtube hasn't been blocked already then? or why Dhahi has to even launch a 'campaign' to tackle this 'problem'? If it's what the citizens want, it must come true mustn't it?

I am against the whole scensoriship that is being prroposed ffrom back in the 1995, why get into peopl's right to read, view and enjoy what they want to discover or explore further.
what is a sexually unacceptable or against the religion also does not need to be scensored in order to have good control and one day this will be proffen, I hope.

a police chief running after people using there computers! and thoes with less to do watching text chat or music channles! come on it was far away better when these things were gone for a while during the busy days of property rush, now that there is less to do we fight ethisem!

samuraisam said...

hahaha.
It's so funny how many times you say us foreigners should go 'back home', have you seen that come true?
Nope.
I guess that's why you say "if you don't like it then leave", because in reality you have absolutely no standing. Just like everyone else.

I guess that means your opinion counts for nothing in govt matters too!

And statements like "keep your mouth shut", which you've been leaving for over 2 years now, haven't done much to keep people's mouths shut, have they?

ABIT, change the record.

In truth, the government appears little more interested in the opinions of citizens than expats - and it does not really need to be. This is not to say that the powers that be do not try and act in what they consider to be the best interests of their citizens. One would imagine, however, that the development path of the UAE - for good or bad (and there is a mix of both) - would be nothing like it is today were it a democracy where citizens set the agenda and their priorities.

There are numerous policies that, if given to a referendum, the local populous would possibly be against. e.g.

* Alcohol (though the number of emiratis at Baracuda in UAQ suggests different)
* Over-development
* Allowing in so many expats!

However, the path chosen by the leadership means these things have happened.

But you don't have a vote, so you really have no more say on public policy than an expat - unless you are particularly close to the powers that be. No Vote, No Voice.

And if you don't like it, you CAN'T leave. Which means the expat is better off that you.

Even if all the expats left, you'll still be here. Given the way the place has developed how well would this country function without expats?

Certainly, it is never a vote winner in democratic states to allow the indigenous populous to become a minority - at least not over such a short period. It simply has not happened.

The power of choice. Its a wonderful thing. Expats have it. They can go home. You don't - you are home already.

Thank you for summing it up very nicely. If Dhahi would spend more time policing Dubai and actually having the police force do ACTUAL police work.. it would be a better city.

Seriously, I openly recommend that he is removed from his position. Then again, we all know how and why he gets to talk like that without anyone saying a thing to him.

And then you have the A-bit(ch) types. Good lord, please help! I wish I could help you understand that the natives are not enough to make it so. Expats DO in fact have a say. Our opinion does hold weight. In fact, I would dare say more so than yours. I know it's hard to swallow, but hey.. life's just a-bit(ch), isn't it?

By any change, is there a similar Center in Dubai or the UAE?

The comments have moved in such a way that it is a fight between citizens n expatriates.

I am an Indian citizen living in Dubai.
I completely support the censorship. What do the people who says they want complete media freedom??
Does they mean that want to watch all the porn and some sites which are used for bad more than their goodness??

I haven't seen any useful knowledge sharing web sites or anything blocked here. I have noticed that only vulgar or useless and completely shameless things are blocked in this country.

So what is the problem???

Should we allow the kids to watch porn at the age of 7 or earlier and make them well educated in porn by the age of 10???
Is that the freedom these guys mean??

Or is it that they want to object everything that is done for good and just do blah blah about it?

samuraisam said...

Orkut n Skype
I dont know why they blocked it, when similar other sites like facebook n yahoo are available. I agree with you.

The rest sites I haven't been to.

Then regarding YouTube, as of now youtube is not blocked and I think they have asked google to bring up a censorship, so that violent, explicit and religion mocking content are censored. Did they ask to shutdown youtube?
And I hope you agree that there are a lot of useless, explicit and violent content in youtube even though they are not hardcore porn.

No. No one is clear on the actual reason of why it was blocked, the best Etisalat can come up with is 'dating'.

"They were not having any serious self censorship"
Are you serious?

"They were not having any serious self censorship"
Like really, did you write that as a serious statement?

"They were not having any serious self censorship"
I cannot believe you.

"They were not having any serious self censorship"
Really?

"They were not having any serious self censorship"
You're actually serious?

"They were not having any serious self censorship"
Alright fine, i'll play along, here go read this

Then regarding YouTube, as of now youtube is not blocked and I think they have asked google to bring up a censorship, so that violent, explicit and religion mocking content are censored. Did they ask to shutdown youtube?
Yes, their second choice would be to shutdown youtube, or have complete control over its content, which would make youtube anything but youtube.

And I hope you agree that there are a lot of useless, explicit and violent content in youtube even though they are not hardcore porn.
So?

It's probably a good idea that people understand what youtube allows/doesn't allow

If we were attacked, they would be the 1st here... AND if we dont play by their rules... they'll be the 1st here as well. Im not naive.

What's wrong with a little healthy debate?

Nothing. When you are at home, look for that "healthy" balance, when you are here, I and my fellow citizens will debate. You dont.

Not in a Monarchy. you forget, we just recently started getting what we want, I have said it a thousand times, I'd think your comprehension was better, but I will say it again. for TWO generations this country basically gave it away to you. No more. Sorry.

As for Dubai's head of police. He isnt in charge. he is in charge of SOME stuff, but he isnt in charge of the internet. These are his OPINIONS, they may echo the majority of the citizen's opinions, but thats all they are. BECAUSE he is in a high place in society, his opinion is heard more than say... yours. lol which is heard about the same as a... mouse. But he is not in charge. And a blanket ban, as I understand is what he is asking for, cant be issued by ANYONE in Dubai. You forget, Abu Dhabi runs the show. Not Dubai.

I guess that's why you say "if you don't like it then leave", because in reality you have absolutely no standing. Just like everyone else.

Ahahahaha! Thats laughable. My father... Minister's grade, Sh. Ahmed Bin Zayed's office. My uncle, Minister's grade, Finance Dept, My Aunt, Deputy Minister's grade, Finance Dept, Her husband, 3 star general, advisor to Sh. Mohamed Bin Zayed, my 4 cousins, deputy minister grades, my older brother, on his way... actually, all of us on our way. I dont need to pretend, I dont need blogs, I dont need anything, I know where I am from, where I am going, and what is expected of me.

We are much more educated than you (I think you once told me you havent even started school), and from "nas" unlike you who showed up from nothing and will leave from nothing.

An no, this isnt arrogance or bragging. This is reality. You know this. And still you would like to pretend it isnt true. It is, and probably always will be here.

It's laughable how arrogant and how "logical" you try to be kid. If you were ANYTHING, you would be SOMETHING in your OWN country.

And statements like "keep your mouth shut", which you've been leaving for over 2 years now, haven't done much to keep people's mouths shut, have they?

Only because "people" (And the term is used very very lightly) like you HIDE behind the innerwebs. I have asked you a few times to meet me. But you know if you ever did, you would never be heard from again.

That what "people" like you do. They hide and bitch. And what do people like me do? well, I am "supposed to" do what I do, live in the REAL world, and leave people like you do as they wish, as they say, Ith Khatabaka Al Jahiloon Qooloo Salama.

But I like computers, and like to annoy people, and I know I can get away with ALOT, so I do annoy people. Plus, watching what I call sub humans bitch about things they cant control amuses me. And Sam, we have had enough conversations for you to at least kind of know what kind of mind I am.

However, the path chosen by the leadership means these things have happened.

Oh very much true. I agree. And I have stated in the past, TWO generations made GRAVE and HUGE mistakes. And I suspect in the next 2 or 3 there will be some "clash" of generations.

But you don't have a vote, so you really have no more say on public policy than an expat - unless you are particularly close to the powers that be. No Vote, No Voice.

Decently close. I wouldnt say I am upper class. But higher middle, or lower upper. But close enough to where my family's opinions do count. You forget, in the UAE a person;s last name defines how powerful he or she is. our last names are decent. And what it lacks in political power it has in money, lol. and money can = power.

And if you don't like it, you CAN'T leave. Which means the expat is better off that you.

I disagree. The very fact that you had to leave your country to find work, or at least work you wanted, means that I am far far better off.

And a person shouldnt leave their country when they dont like it. they should put up with it, and do what they can, large or small, to help change it. make it better.

but BETTER is debatable. And in this case, the UAE, going forward, will have to start making it better as defined by its citizens and BY it's citizens.

Gone are the times when an Emarati could sit at home, no education, no skills, have 3 Egyptian "advisors" and drive an S500. This generation is infact the FIRST that has HAD to work. and thus knows what the last few had given up. I think you would agree. Some sadly, are stuck in the past and those are the citizens that I will gladly sell to you to take back home with you! Mount them on the wall or something.

Even if all the expats left, you'll still be here. Given the way the place has developed how well would this country function without expats?

It would adjust. This country should have never been allowed to become this large, this "modern" and this greedy. It may be too late to tear down all the buildings, but it isnt too late to start shifting to a different way of thinking.

The power of choice. Its a wonderful thing. Expats have it. They can go home. You don't - you are home already.

It is an amazing thing! And more foreigners should use it!

Although I dont agree with 80% of what you wrote, I actually kind of maybe feel that you arent a complete moron. Hope to hear more from you.

ABIT, who cares what you want? You and your retarded population can turn off your computers and go back to riding camels and sleeping in tents. For the rest of us, we want unfettered access to information.

Yes, and you westerners can go back to killing babies in far away lands and ending up in jail for having babies with your own daughters.

You want unfiltered info? Go back home. VERY SIMPLE. Guess what, my ISP is a UAE based one. So no, I wont turn off my computers. But you should try it, since the UAE ISPs are so so bad.

If only IT had one to edit ITs senseless comments...

Nah, but IT does have a foot that is aching for your back side. And IT doesnt use the term EXPAT. A way to glorify the fact that you are a foreign mercenary here for money. Kind of like a sniper... or russian prostitute. (If you are infact Russian I didnt mean it literally)

2. The new Dubai "rules" what I wanted, not you
3. Internet filtration, What I want, not you.

You would like to claim, believe even, that you and I are on par when it comes to what ends up actually happening, but those few and recent examples shows you otherwise.

And slowly (I mean, over the next 2 or 3 generations) it will get worse for foreigners here. God willing.

And the final irony of this post is... you are all talking about how you dislike censorship... ON A CENSORED BLOG.

They were happy to include him, the only problem was he quit every time he was "it" and rejoined after someone else was tagged. It was embarrassing for him; he truly didn't know how to play fair.
You know, ABIT, if you kept your cool more people would listen to you, and you've got a valid point of view. Okay, okay, I know you're the ONLY one with a valid point of view:))
If I were a local, I'd be sick of people coming to the UAE, benefitting from the opportunities/safety/luxury/beauty and then complaining ad nauseam. Fact is, most of them could NOT live nearly as well in their home countries. And Secret Dubai -what's keeping her in Dubai? Can't be all altruism.
That said, you can deny it all you want but the UAE has to IMPORT expertise and laborers - and lots of both - and will need to do so for a long time to come.
The sad thing is, you never hear from those who love your country. Sure it's got problems, but so does every city in the world.

ABIT goes on and on about this new generation of Emiratis, and their skill sets, and education and a whole bunch of other nonsense.....

Without early British intervention and guidance, and today's continued expat help you'd still be herding goats in the desert.

I've seen Emarati's at "work" many times, at ministries, at banks, and most recently getting my brand new "Emirates ID" card.

Never in all my travels around the world have I seen such rude, lazy and stupid employees.

If you can get one to get off their phone, which seems to be permanently on, and get them to concentrate on the task at hand, you may complete what you came to do by gently guiding them along.

At the Emirates building, I couldn't help laughing when trying to get my "Emirates ID"....It literally took 5 "emiratis/morons" to process my application. One didn't have her password, another one didn't know where the applications were, one was too busy reading a magazine, not to mention the half an hour I had to wait for a man to come and take my prints because women can't touch my hands (is it part of your culture? well your culture is stupid for lack of a better word).

To this day, the majority of your people are superstitious, make love to camels, and eat locusts they find in the desert.

You're backwards, ignorant, and as a previous poster said, you act like spoilt children who've suddenly come into a bit of money.

You have a good last name? Who gives a damn? Make something of yourself by using your own merits, not riding the coat tales of your Bin-whatever last name is.

To further illustrate the arrogance of Gulf Arabs, go to Dubai Museum, they have an old map of the region, where you can clearly see someone has removed the name "Persian Gulf" and written in free hand "Arabian Gulf". They've come in to a bit of money, and they are trying to change the established name of a body of water that has been called the PERSIAN GULF since antiquity.

The examples above, and their general management of their money, their ministries, their road systems, their culutre, etc.. all adds to the correct perception that the world has of them, mainly of being, lazy, ignorant, arrogant backwards camel jockeys.

I usualy try and be nice to those in the human race who through no fault of their own, but through centuries of inbreeding are a bit slower than the rest of the world population. However, there is only so much bs I can take from the likes of Abit(ch)

So my choice in hardware (amazing hardware mind you) tells you what kind of person I am? Great. Very logical. Very.

So that whole last post was basically this:

You have NO education (an education can be attested, by that "piece of paper" that you mock, but is the basis of getting you fed.) You dont really need one (I cant beleieve someon ein 2009 said that.) your qualifications (if any) cant be attested by anyone but yourself, and you are a legal adult who doesnt know where he's going...

YET! you like to comment on everything and anything.

Interesting. So not only do you not have a right to bitch about things on the ground that you arent from here. BUT even in your own country, you wouldnt be taken seriously as you arent qualified to do anything.

And somehow you have people on here eating out of your hands. you arent profound, and you are less than nothing. You ARE Abood or Jassoom from Bani Yas.

You arent 50. I agree. if you were 50 in your current situation you would be a waste, left to degrade because your time is past. That would be ok.

Instead you are 21, in your prime... and a waste. Lovely.

As for the link, I dont assume. I dont like assumptions. So I didnt assume you knew what it was. I think its more logical to explain one's self than assume others get everything one is saying. Plus, the 1st time I heard of it I thought of the cartoon.

A side thought, WHAT do you have against the mighty mouse? Do you use one? HAVE you ever OWNED one? Not used it in a store for 10 minutes. What do you base your dislike of it on?

It's probably the best mouse I have ever used. PROVIDED you use a Mac. All the bells and whistles are useless unless you use OSX. One button to everything. I dont know what OS you use, but I used a wired one with my Ubuntu box and hated it.

As for quality of parts, Its ok. Not super special, but its price is mid range as well. You can get better, for more. and worse for less.

Like I said, if you want everything to be ONE click or ONE movement away in OSX, its the best mouse ever made.

Where were you educated, I imagine you studied abroad at some point. Therefore the very fact that you had to leave your country to find education, or at least education you wanted, means that ... (blah blah blah). No, it doesn't of course, because your arguments ABIT are at best nonsensical and at worst racist.

Following your logic no one should ever leave their country or work elsewhere.

Personally I like it here and intend to stay for a good few more years yet (sorry if that disappoints you), the only drawback is having to put up with people like you.

I have many, many Emirati friends and colleagues, and I will tell you that NONE of them shares your views.

Neither does HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid either, thank goodness. The Prime Minister of the UAE is welcoming questions about government from all sectors of society (Emiratis and expats) on his website and has pledged to address all the issues raised.

If only you were more like your leaders, then we all all be a better off.

I await your usual vitriolic reply...

I know it's late and the topic of this has apparently once again shifted to Emaratis Vs Expats - Season 2 but I found this tidbit about google in another country and I thought it might interest someone and give some interesting ideas to Dubai Police.

"YouTube users in Korea are no longer able to upload new videos or comment on existing ones. The changes come in response to the country's recent Cyber Defamation Law. Enacted on April 1st, the law requires users of all sites with more than 100,000 uniques a day to provide real names and national ID numbers, in order to curb anonymous comments."

Take this:

"So my choice in hardware (amazing hardware mind you) tells you what kind of person I am? Great. Very logical. Very."..and then compare with this, which is no more than the next paragraph:

"You have NO education (an education can be attested)"You are so incredibly educated ABIT.

"It's probably the best mouse I have ever used. PROVIDED you use a Mac. All the bells and whistles are useless unless you use OSX. One button to everything. I dont know what OS you use, but I used a wired one with my Ubuntu box and hated it."I use windows and mac. For both operating systems I cannot think of a worse mouse to use. If you think the mighty mouse is a good mouse, then you obviously can't have used many mice.

"You dont really need one (I cant beleieve someon ein 2009 said that.)"Yes, it's impossible that a non-doctor/lawyer/banker can succeed in life without a degree of some sort. I'm sure that the billions of people without a university education all keel over and die from being such huge failures.
Your fathoms of human knowledge astound me ABIT, you must have had a truly interesting and diverse life to come to be working at a bank, sitting behind a desk and using the worst mouse to ever be produced in the history of mankind to browse your excel documents. You are the pinnacle of achievement as far as everyone is concerned. The fact that someone doesn't want what you want in life is absolutely impossible.

"And somehow you have people on here eating out of your hands."Not really. Most people are indifferent to me, or think I'm ok, and some will hate me. But for you ABIT, most people just plain hate you.

"A side thought, WHAT do you have against the mighty mouse? Do you use one? HAVE you ever OWNED one? Not used it in a store for 10 minutes. What do you base your dislike of it on?"Yes I have used one, and used it for my laptop for a while on both Mac OS and windows. It's a piece of shit. It's the worst mouse I have ever used on the face of the earth, it's the worst apple mouse on the face of the earth (and considering some of their other products, that is really saying something).

"Only because "people" (And the term is used very very lightly) like you HIDE behind the innerwebs. I have asked you a few times to meet me. But you know if you ever did, you would never be heard from again."Ooh. Not only do you click through excel documents using your mighty mouse, you're also a part-time internet tough guy. I'm scared.

(blah blah blah). No, it doesn't of course, because your arguments ABIT are at best nonsensical and at worst racist.

Actually, if you want to be technical, I left my country for my 2nd country (my father has 2 wives, my mother is American. so I merely left one of my sides for the other for a while)

And the fact that I am 1/2 and 1/2 means that 1. I can leave (as long as it's only to the US) without being a hypocrite, and 2. I can HATE the west without being racist... I can play both sides of the fence. I have that right.

You didnt see that one coming didja?

As for leaving the UAE for my education. I only got my undergrad from the US. I did my MBA here. I was actually "forced" by my father to go to "get to know" my mother's family.

A bunch of (enter your general stereotype of Americans... they are mostly true) I did the minimum and got my ass out of there.

Never in all my travels around the world have I seen such rude, lazy and stupid employees.

Oh I've seen worse in the UK. the US... The only place Ive seen better workers than Emaratis is in Japan. Obviously you havent travelled much.

Without early British intervention and guidance, and today's continued expat help you'd still be herding goats in the desert.

Actually, my family have been traders for about 200 years. So without the UK... we'd still be doing what we are now doing. Maybe not as affluent, but Im sure if the God like UK didnt come by, France, Germany, or maybe even Iran would have taken the lead. The assumption of of, this happened because of X and if X hadnt have done blah it would have never happened is false. Someone else would have.

And by the same logic, if it were not for my people, your people wouldnt have hospitals. Works both ways.

You know, ABIT, if you kept your cool more people would listen to you, and you've got a valid point of view. Okay, okay, I know you're the ONLY one with a valid point of view:))

Not the only, many people have valid points of view, but Im the only one who ALWAYS has a valid point of view.

Backed into a corner? hardly. EVERYONE on here has exposed himself/herself as a hypocrite, racist or illogical EXCEPT for me.

You're backwards, ignorant, and as a previous poster said, you act like spoilt children who've suddenly come into a bit of money.

So leave. Simple. If it's that bad i will buy you a 1st class ticket back to your homeland. Im not kidding.

You have a good last name? Who gives a damn? Make something of yourself by using your own merits, not riding the coat tales of your Bin-whatever last name is.

Actually, everyone who matters... oh, and the law. I have my own merits. But my name is a good thing to have as well. You play the cards you are dealt. If you have issues with being no body from nowhere, thats your beef, not mine.

Example. I could beat the living shit out of you infront of 10 people in Abu Dhabi and NEVER EVER EVER see the inside of a cell. Actually, YOU would be arrested. See, even the law cares. Dont be naive, and dont try to change reality. What SHOULD and what IS are 2 very different things.

that has been called the PERSIAN GULF since antiquity.

I agree. And since I'm not technically Arab, I am 100% in agreement here.

A Sudanese said...
ABIT - please don't ever mention Sudan. You know nothing about it and you should keep your mouth shut. Aside from the fact that Sudan has oil, its other resources make the UAE look like a village. So, please, spare me your know-it-all bullshit

Yes, thats why your "leader" has the UN on his ass and your people are hungry. Amazing. Thats like saying oh, Iran is rich in resources!

Yes, yes it is. Very much so, but whats the point of those resources when people are hungry.

Dont mention Sudan? Oh I wish it didnt exist. but it does, sadly.

I have many, many Emirati friends and colleagues, and I will tell you that NONE of them shares your views.

Actually they do. They just arent vocal about it. Which would you prefer, a person who lies to your face and wishes for your demise behind your back, or someone who tells you the truth up front?

The examples above, and their general management of their money, their ministries, their road systems, their culutre, etc.. all adds to the correct perception that the world has of them, mainly of being, lazy, ignorant, arrogant backwards camel jockeys.

I like how whenever I'm involved in a debate I NEVER go off on a racist rant (unless it was 1st started by someone else) yet others need to stoop to that level... you just proved that you are a moron.

and has pledged to address all the issues raised.

Hasnt the govt "pledged" so many many things? How many have come true? Yeah. If thats some hope you are clinging to, please dont hold your breath. The real agenda and the public one are 2 different things.

More like my leaders? In many ways I am, and in many ways I am not. I agree with much of what they have done, and disagree with some as well. It's called having opinions.

"YouTube users in Korea are no longer able to upload new videos or comment on existing ones. The changes come in response to the country's recent Cyber Defamation Law. Ooooh! That would be so cool if it got implemented here!

It's a very good thing. And it's not sad. It's how things should be. Why should some bum off the street be treated like me? And why should I be treated like say... a member of the ruling family.

Classes have always existed. And try as we might (Even my own religion tries to diminish the voids) it's human nature. It is.

Sam. Yes, jokes. The worthless kid makes jokes.

(I really do hope you get your head on straight. Even though I'd beat the living shit out of you and have you jailed forever if I ever met you, I DO respect you in some weird way, and hope that you are continuing your studies and do "conquer the world" in your own way, because although I think you are a moron, I know many people more moronic than you)

So wait, THAT is your superior mouse to the mighty mouse?

Its ok, not special. it's fine I guess. Like i said, the mighty mouse isnt the best mouse out there in general. And price wise, (with mice from 39 to 900+) its midrange. But if you do use OSX, it makes computing a whole lot easier.

Bipolar, and any mental illness, isnt something to poke fun at. You would poke a fat kid with a stick while saying "Dont feed the bear" would you?

You are the same kind of moron that, if a thread was made about the lack of treatment centers for mental issues in the UAE, would join the bitching wagon. Sad.

It has teflon coated feet. It's also widely considered to be the best mouse money can buy, which is something I agree 100% with.

Then again it is my primary mouse; I have a Logitech G3 for my laptop which is almost as good but not as good.

My medication bills are proof enough (damn insurance doesnt pay for "crazy" meds) though trust me, bipolar people dont think this way. This is me. And that should be refreshing to you. Infact, when a bipolar person is showing episodes of his/her illness, he/she doesnt even know it. Reality is skewed. And that is scary. Maybe to you, its more scary that every word I say are my own.

Sam:

Im not taking a number or getting in line. One day you will annoy the wrong person, in person, and you wont end up in a good place.

It's also widely considered to be the best mouse money can buy

By who? The kid with no qualifications? Generalizations arent the best argument. And you still havent told me what was so bad with the mighty mouse. Or is it your OPINION that its crap?

I think logitech is crap. Ive owned 3 of them, from different price brackets. A waste of money. and we have 2 downstairs for the desktops. They are nothing compared to the mighty mouse.

samuraisam said...

"Im not taking a number or getting in line. One day you will annoy the wrong person, in person, and you wont end up in a good place."

Ok, then you can take a number for the line consisting of people who have said those exact words to me over the past several years.

"By who? The kid with no qualifications? Generalizations arent the best argument. And you still havent told me what was so bad with the mighty mouse. Or is it your OPINION that its crap?"

Oh ffs. I already explained that I do have qualifications you idiot. It's not a generalization, go and read the amazon review page, the mighty mouse is rated 3+1/2 stars out of 5, the g9 is rated 4+1/2 stars out of 5. Statistically speaking it is rated better. Statistically speaking it has less 1 star reviews than the mighty mouse--by far.
Here are some 5 star review titles for the G9 from amazon:
"This mouse is the best mouse available today"
"Best mouse ever!"
"the best mouse ever!"
and that is only from the first page of reviews.

Compare to the first page of 5 star mighty mouse reviews:
"We have right click YAY!!!"

Wow. Right click. Speaking of which, thats exactly why the mighty mouse sucks, the right click is a joke, the whole concept of the mouse is a complete joke.

The number of times I've seen advanced users of macs sit down to a mighty mouse and click it slightly wrong (and when the entire thing is a button, how can you fucking click it wrong in the first place?) and have some stupid apple menu pop up offering to play you dvd's or wash your socks is countless.

Not only is the right click/multiple buttons completely flawed, the scroll wheel is the biggest piece of shit I've ever seen to grace a mouse. It sucks.

The tracking of the mouse is absolutely and completely pathetic too, especially for a product that costs as much as it does.

The right click/left click mechanism is a complete and utter failure, the wikipedia page for the mighty mouse even notes this:
"The Mighty Mouse does not report whether the right and left sensor is activated simultaneously. In fact, it reports a right-click only when there is no finger contact on the left side of the mouse. This means that the Mighty Mouse cannot support mouse chording, used by CAD software, games, and other applications where multiple functions are mapped to the mouse."

The apple mighty mouse also produces a wireless version--something that speaks to the market it is directed to, casual users.

The apple mighty mouse also shares one characteristic with all apple mice, it gives you RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome and can make your back and neck hurt a lot. This is obviously something that is on a person to person basis, but I've found apple mice (of recent anyway, the apple mouse for my 7600 macintosh was pretty good) to be highly uncomfortable; as someone who uses computers frequently and takes my posture/health seriously I will not use an apple mighty mouse.

You know what also sucks about apple products in general? Apple software. I would sooner install fking real player than install any apple software on my computer.

The apple mighty mouse is a failure. Yes, this is my opinion as someone who has used the product for more than a few days, I have to put up with the stupid piece of shit at many computers I sit down to (which are obviously not my computers, otherwise they wouldn't have an apple mighty mouse, this is why I try to bring a better mouse with me in case I am confronted with an apple mighty mouse). I do not believe I am at all alone in this opinion.

I've probably been through 4 or 5 mice in the last 2-3 years from a few brands, the Logitech G9 wins hands down as the best mouse money can buy. There is no other mouse I have heard of (either for gaming or serious use, both of which I require) that approaches the quality and precision of the G9.

You can even set the X+Y axis sensitivity independently.

I'm not particularly fond of any mouse brand-- but I do appreciate the quality of Logitech and Microsoft mice and keyboards, at the moment I use a Logitech G15 keyboard (macros are heaven for anything webdesign related) and a G9 mouse on my primary computer.

Anonymous said...

Ah! The amazon reviews! because those people are tech experts or qualified IT technicians.

No, they are average joes, like you, like me. So the "stars" on Amazon isnt a real source of which product is better than which. Something like Consumer Report for example, is.

No, you dont have qualifications. When one has qualifications, they are (like a news story) based on 3rd party and expert testimony or certification. IE, a degree. You have NO qualifications, which would probably explain why you dont have a job.

So the right click is a joke? Based on who's review. Once again I will ask, HAVE YOU EVER OWNED A MIGHTY MOUSE?

You like to talk Sam, but you hardly ever back up what you say with facts. Amazon! Yeah, ok. I do have qualifications! Says who? The right click sucks! you would know how?

Sad, very very sad.

And dont offf! me. I've feeling the Offf! because of your inability to give a straight answer and provide backing for them, real backing, is only ever seen in an Arab's speech. You Arab Sam?

Now thats laughable. Apple software sucking. What in particular? and what do you base that opinion on?

The apple mighty mouse is a failure. Yes, this is my opinion as someone who has used the product for more than a few days, I have to put up with the stupid piece of shit at many computers I sit down to (which are obviously not my computers, otherwise they wouldn't have an apple mighty mouse, this is why I try to bring a better mouse with me in case I am confronted with an apple mighty mouse). I do not believe I am at all alone in this opinion.

You might not be alone in that opinion, but you are in the minority. the mighty mouse has been a great success for Apple. you can argue it's because they are shipped with every desktop Mac and therefore the user gets used to it, maybe, but a success is a success.

And once again, as you said, this is your opinion, even though you have never owned one, and you arent qualified to actually give a decent opinion on this (or any topic we have found out) so you could claim that the sky is red and I'd brush your opinion off as what it is. Crap being spewed out of a worthless kid's mouth.

A side note... If you are so worthless, why do I continue to even talk to you here? Entertainment. You are to the innerwebs what those windup monkey's that bang on a drum are to toys.

But dont take this as animosity. I still love you man!

which would probably explain why you dont have a job."It could also be because I'm studying full time at the moment you idiot. Of course if you could actually read, I've already said that I'm studying at the moment. And of course if you could read, I've already said I have a mighty mouse.

You know you really fucking fail at reading properly? I've said all this shit 5 times over and you just keep on asking the same fucking question over and over again.
Here I'll put it in bold:
"I do have an education (which I'm still completing at the moment)"Go fucking re-read everything I've written because you're a complete moron and you can't read properly, your failure of a mighty mouse is probably skipping through the page without you realizing.

"Now thats laughable. Apple software sucking. What in particular? and what do you base that opinion on?"I base that upon the fact that I was unable to get itunes to run on 3 separate PC's. Also I base it upon the fact that you have to use itunes with your ipod/iphone. I have an iriver, I can plug it into any computer, anywhere and copy music and videos to and from it through windows, linux, DOS, Mac OS and literally anything. I also base that upon the fact that I've been using macs for several years all the way through Mac OS 6 or 7 and to put it simply if I could take the person who created 'extensions', I'd take them out to a field and shoot them right now.

"And once again, as you said, this is your opinion, even though you have never owned one, and you arent qualified to actually give a decent opinion on this (or any topic we have found out) so you could claim that the sky is red and I'd brush your opinion off as what it is. Crap being spewed out of a worthless kid's mouth."

Actually I went into my cupboard and dug through all the other worthless crappy products and look what I found ABIT!
QED bitch. You're the only person I've ever had to prove owning a mighty mouse to. Even if I didn't own one, I've had to use the mighty mouse hundreds of times for many, many hours.

"arent qualified to actually give a decent opinion"

Yeah I'm obviously not qualified having used hundreds of mice over the past 18 years on hundreds of different systems. Sorry everyone, my opinion is completely invalid because I don't have a masters in mouse systems analysis. Sorry to everyone else that I've been using final cut pro, pro tools, photoshop and every other piece of software these years without having a clue because I don't have a qualification.

"So the right click is a joke? Based on who's review."God you're such a dolt. It's on the wikipedia page for the mighty mouse. It doesn't get any worse than that. Actually it does...
Ok, how about this, ON THE APPLE STORE WEBSITE, THE OFFICIAL APPLE STORE WEBSITE, IT IS RATED 3/5 STARS BY 1189 PEOPLE. IT DOESN'T GET SHITTER THAN THAT.Apple itself is putting out that this product is a 3/5 product. It's not a 5/5 product. There you go.

"the mighty mouse has been a great success for Apple. you can argue it's because they are shipped with every desktop Mac and therefore the user gets used to it"

So? they also ship that atrocious keyboard. Which is also a piece of crap.

I'm sorry, when one says I do have an education, then follows that up with I'm still completing, the 2 cancel each other out.

Do you have any PROOF that you have an education? Any PROOF that you can actually use what you have "been " using?

No, you dont. Only your word. Well that isnt good enough in a world where you need proof. a degree is proof, a certificate is proof.

21 and still completing? You should have already graduated if you are and were studying full time.

So Apple's software... is crap because... it wont work with your non-Apple hardware. Thats funny.

I suggest you do the following, Bu an iMac, and then tell me how crappy the flawless integration of all their hardware and software is.

I know, today Apple makes software for other OSes. But that kind of as bad as trying to use Office on a Mac... it exists, and it kind of sort of work, but it wasnt even meant to be used that way.

And I have said a thousand times, Apple products (like the mighty mouse) are made mainly for Macs. And if you have a Mac setup, you will love it.

Never said you needed a masters in anything for the mouse, but you arent a reputable tech magazine, or a consumer watch group, or even a respectable member of society.

And as you have proven, when called out, you resort to name calling and your true childish self comes out.

Immature, a waste, uneducated, and unqualified for anything but the most basic human actions, like breathing.

LOL, and you remind me that you are the power of censorship on a thread about freedom! Nice. God you must really hate yourself when you wake up in the morning. I would if I were you.

Dont strain yourself too hard my friend. I wont go on about this anymore. You like lesser OSes, lesser mp3 players, and lesser hardware, thats ok, To each his own. @ Rose in Dubai: Personal attacks are probably more vile and loathsome than arrogance - a trait ABIT exemplifies.
While he can keep all of you engaged in a war of words, there is no justification for you to get personal and mock his predicament - or make light of the mentally challenged.

Nothing ABIT had said so far left as bad a taste in the mouth as your four lines. Yet you call yourself civilized.

You are absolutely right.

ABIT, I apologise.

But will you and Sam please give up on the silly computer squabble!

You're the only person to have ever read this blog and ask me to prove my qualifications?

Then it pleases me to be the 1st! (a la transformers!)

So I should just take you and your thoughts and opinions at face value? No sir. When you are an editor for some tech magazine, then your opinion on a mouse will matter. And when you are an educated and productive member of society, then ANYTHING you say will carry weight.

Sam, I've been using Macs for 18 or so years. You can beat that? You would have been 3. Dont lie.

the 1st computer in our house when I was in grade school was a Mac. And aside from my "experimenting" linux box, all my computers have been, and always will be Macs.

Sam, what do you NEEd an OLED screen for? seriously? you're like the kid who wants a MBP with 4 MBs of RAM. You dont NEED it.

And the only MP3 player I have is a nano that was a gift. Why? I have a life, a job, I dont have time for an mp3 player.

Rose. I'm done. No more computer stuff. Ok?

I have been using computers (Mac + PC) since I was 3. The first computer I used was an IBM PS/2, I played games such as Indy 5000 and lemmings. I also have fond memories of playing games like Commander Keen in my younger years. I learned how to use AVID when I was 11. I learned how to use Quark Xpress and Photoshop when I was probably around the age of 10 (Photoshop I am actually qualified to use if you must know).

Your last comment accuses me of being unable to afford anything good, this comment accuses me of buying things which I don't need which must mean I have too much money. Make up your mind.

I pity the person that wants a macbook pro with 4 MB of RAM. I have 2GB personally (its an older model, thats the maximum supported), otherwise my main computer has 4 GB of RAM which I manage to use up quite quickly, I will probably upgrade to 8GB and a newer processor/motherboard at some stage (mainly just to piss you off), but I'll need to find a motherboard that has 8 SATA ports like my current one, and I'd also need to find a very good reason to upgrade (the last one was GTA IV on PC, which ended up costing me quite dearly once I got the GTX 280)

My dual G5 has 4 GB too. In any case, if you buy a computer such as a macbook pro or a desktop, the cost to upgrade RAM is minimal in comparison to the cost of the computer itself. Even if you don't use it all.

And as for your comment about me using 'lesser' hardware, show me your mac pro with a GTX 280 or decent graphics card (and before you start yapping about "no time for gaemes!" there are other uses of a gfx card besides games)
