This is so cool if it is successful:
"Dubai has set up a committee to investigate launching a bid to host both the 2020 Olympics and the 2020 World Expo.
If successful, it would be the first time both events were staged in the Middle East, and in the one country."
More here.
What do you think? And will we be able to pull it off?

Dubai can probably pull it off, except for the weather. Aren't the Olympics a summer game?
I'm sure they'd make it indoor - or AC the sand like that hotel lmao. It would totally be cool if it were to happen though.
One word>> ISRAEL!!!
The UAE can't handle the Olympics. I'm 30 minutes south of where the 2010 winter Olympics will be held. The preparation has been going on for years now and includes things like rebuilding transportation routes (literally, entire highways are being torn up and rebuilt, while parkades are being designed) to increasing security & rescue forces and retraining police to handle situations specific to the Olympics. Not to mention immigration would be over-burdened with the number of visit visas to be issued for such a short period of time, and here hotels are already booked full during the games.
UAE wouldn't be able to handle the planning aspect of it all. If you think traffic is bad in the UAE now, wait until they win these bids!
And Dubai Jazz, I believe there are Winter & Summer Olympics.
True. What will you do, ban a country that most of the world acknowledges? Bleh.
And may I ask just when Dubai became a country? You state "in one country" yet you also title the blog DUBAI 2020.
Tainted Female, I know about the winter Olympics. But it's obvious that Dubai won't ever be bidding for that one.
As for the summer ones, they take place right in the midst of August, usually. And indoors won't cover it all; even if you could build a gigantic stadium for soccer and athletics; what would you do for Marathons and Triathlons? even Gebrselassie won't stand the heat and the humidity.
Dubai can certainly pull it off on the planning/organizing part. I still think weather is the main obstacle.
I wonder what exactly tainted that female... hum...
Dubai cant even get a 4 lane highway right, they are going to plan for the biggest sports "show" in the world?
When Qatar's bid for the 2016 Olympics was turned down, the weather was the principle factor. The Committee were actually suitably impressed with the sporting facilities built for the 2006 Asia Games (as a base to expand on). But the Marathon, 26 miles in 45C doesn't quite work.
Great...Summer Olympics...in 50 degree heat! I don't think so. Nice try though.
I actually blogged about this myself, so if I may shameless plug in some of my comments here:
"...I am just going to be the dumb child in the Emperor's New Clothes parade and say it flat out,'The UAE doesn't have relevant qualifications!' ... A quick search on 'Canada sports' returned 1.76 billion results, whereas 'UAE sports' only 6.8 million, that's less than 1%! ..."
"I wonder what exactly tainted that female... hum..."
The UAE.
Oh just more attention seeking vanity posturing perhaps trying to get one up on AD or Qatar a waste of time and effort other than for the consultants who will hold their sides laughing all the way to a nationalised bank.
i think not
