A Part of Facebook is blocked

First of all, don't panic. :)

I emptied my browser's cache yesterday, and logged into facebook today to see that it looked like s#$t. Being a web developer, I tested the page to see what was wrong and it turned out that my browser wasn't loading the style sheets and javascript files, and other assets for facebook. But I could read everything fine, and I could post, etc.

The Reason ? http://static.ak.facebook.com is blocked. Accidentally, perhaps, I don't know. This blocked url usually serves the style sheets and script files that lays out facebook's content on your browser.

But if your browser has those files cached on your pc, then facebook should work fine for you ... for the time being. So, don't empty your browser cache ;)

what's next? full fledged block of Facebook because it technically IS against the moral, religious values of the UAE much like Orkut and others were....

So annoying - I emptied my cache 2 days ago. Etisalat is a firm of HYPOCRITES!

Anonymous said...

god! All this time I thought it was something wrong with my computer. Is there any way get your cache back? I mean can anyone upload it online for some one else to download? ( I'm just throwing ideas around )

Oh Man, This really is sick. I had already cleaned out my cache because I thought there might be something wrong in there. And my history, and everything else. I've managed to get in through a circumnavigator but although I can read messages, I can't reply. How frustrating is this??!! What a bunch of ***** Etisalat are.

why dont we just put up a list of all our favourite websites so TRA can block them once and for all and stop the surprises.
flickr - gone
orkut - gone
facebook - MIA

pipeline:
youtube (next. unblocking it was never a good idea)
blogger(very soon. it allows people to express an opinion they shouldnt have in the first place)
etisalat homepage (?! they might as well. having internet would be no fun if you could atually USE it you know?)

i can't post anything, accept friend requests or basically do anything that requires pushing a "button"...what can I do? My web browser clears my cache every time I log off. Is there any hope?!!!!

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Has anyone figured out a solution to Etisalat's dumb action ???

Nice way of taking down a site without actually taking it down.

With all the expats in this country that use facebook to stay in touch with family and friends, the UAE just became that much more lonely.

:(

Anonymous said...

Watch them blame it on the servers where Facebook's hosted.

Anonymous said...

LOL

From 7days:

Internet providers Etisalat said the problem was not linked to them but due to “some changes to software on the site which have made accessing it all but impossible.”

FACEBOOK MUST DIE! it is completely against Islam values and morals! etisalat shuld block it. Allahu Akbar! Allah is angry with all you infidels who are on Facebook.

Before they ban blogger, I'll trycompile a list of possible ways to bypass the blockings...

It's not a legal matter, right?

Just that the ISP wants to be an uptight fuckwit about what you can and can't see, right?

I'll post them on my blog. Since I'm not under Etisalat, I'm willing to help all of you get pass these unfair blockings. :|

I can't test them out myself, though, so be warned. >_<;

I am having serious trouble with my facebook....since today. Was working fine at work but not at home with Etisalat. Anyone has any news on facebook being banned?

Anonymous said...

I can not even log on to face book today - this is getting silly!

Ps - If it is against your morals or relgious beliefs - solution - simple I know - don't use it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having the same problem. Has anyone figured out a way around it? This is so depressing.

I think its blocked even if we are not seeing the annoying RED 'SITE BLOCKED' BANNER.

I was able to log on to facebook using a proxy software.
This means that there is no problem with facebook outside the UAE.

Thank you etisalat for being as annoying as usual.

i've been having the same problem with my typepad blog. can login to the account but can't see my blog.

facebook is working normally now.
Not sure why they unoficially blocked it for almost 2 days.
But, that surely wasn't a facebook problem. It was something done by Etisalat locally.

very odd, my facebook still isnt working! i noticed yesterday afternoon and up till now still blocked. im sharing a villa with 5 other facebook users and only 1 of us has had no problems what so ever. this really get on my nervs, as ive lived in 5 countrys i have many friends and family members from all over the globe who i usually keep in touch with on a daily basis through facebook

Its working again ... "kind of" ... the bastards were obviously testing some way of blocking the site or making it un-useable. Its typical of New-Dubai ... just one more restriction we have to deal with.

Anonymous said...

well that sorts it! my mate in cisco systems just informed me that etisalat announced the blocking on facebook! prats!

Anonymous said...

wts an iphone?? cud anybody tell me..? n how can we log on facebook thru iphone??

thanx!

Unknown said...

Etislalat is really annoying..facebook is far secure than other sites like orkut and hi5...so its a request don't block facebook...etisalat people are idiots...annoying rascals

ashi said...

well it's working again.

for those for whom it's still not working try putting in a proxy.

tools>internet options> connections>lan settings. check use proxy for your LAN. type in proxy1.emirates.net.ae port 8080.

that worked for me. could even access my typepad blog after that.

Anonymous said...

maybe its ot blocked actually cuz wen they blocked orkut, it came all over the paper but this time there is no news regarding facebook being blocked! wt do u guys say??

Anonymous said...

Iphone.facebook.com works....and facebook works with a proxy. stinks.

Anonymous said...

So, is it bloked or not? I'm working in DMC and here, being a freezone, is working. What about in the rest of Dubai?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the tip about putting the proxy server manually. Worked fine for me after that. Can recommend trying!

This is getting beyond annoying. I mean what exactly is so bad about facebook that they feel they need to block it? There has to be a way to protest it, I mean really. I am wondering if it is blocked on Du or not? I am seriously considering switching to Du just to stop giving Etisalat my money. I got on with the proxy server that was mentioned above but that only lasted for a hot minute. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

ashi said...

i've been off and on facebook all evening. it's all good. not blocked at all.

just use proxy1.emirates.net.ae 8080 in your LAN settings.

Anonymous said...

Guys lets unit incase it turns out that they blocked it, the best way to protest is everyone should cancel the subcribtion with Etisalat this is enough to say"that if u r going to control us we do not want your services anymore"

Anonymous said...

I wish we could all just terminate our contracts but unfortunately we all need internet and email. And if we all did leave, you think those a**holes would care? They would just say khali wali and go on making their billions of dollars. PS I just came back from vacation back home (canada) and wow, what a difference in the speed of the internet. Etisalat blows hard

Can someone explain to me why facebook is against Islam? Does islam not agree with friends and family having a close relationship and knowing what is going on with their family. Or does it not like the idea that when we open our facebook and see there is a message from our mother who is in another country and we haven't seen for 2 years, it puts a smile on our face and gives us a sense of wellbeing that our family are thinking about us!!! Tell me what is it about that, that is so wrong!! You think Allah is angry with us... what about all you muslims who sleep all day long because your fasting and the second the sun goes down you stuff your face full of food and throw 40 cigarettes down your throat... you think that's what ramadan is about!!!

Anonymous said...

you guys can call DU service and ask for internet service as many site are not blocked. why not

i heard abt showtime service as well and media city service which can implement it in your house...so why not we change to other services than putting our head in this tiny hole...

flickr, hi5, facebook.. whats next... its pethatic that these people are trying to isolate us from the world..the connection..i guess they block these site so that we can use the phone and call abroad..etc..

skype is blocked..duno what is blocked.. but public chat is on.. i mean wastah is working very well here...

Facebook is back up and running. Who knows for how long, but lets enjoy it while we can :-)
