This was a few years back: but I had a friend who was waiting weeks to get ADSL. Bumping into the head of EIM and mentioning this solved the problem within a few hours.
Ok... I've been waiting since the 4th of June. They lost my application 4+ times. After dealing with the customer support line up until the end of last month I finally visited their main office in Deira and they still haven't fixed it. What I've heard from both the Deira office and 101 is that the problem is being fixed in Abu Dhabi (I was first told this like 10-20 days ago).
The best part: Now the bill is for 2 megabits but the service is only 1 megabit.
Sorry to hear Sam - kinda sucks! If I maybe honest - Vitamin W (Wasta) often helps in the UAE. My folks had a high profile *friend* within Etisalat. A casual call and viola upgraded next working day. This was perhaps almost 2 years ago (?) OR perhaps Etisalat is just better in SHJ hehehehe :)
grumpy goat: Are you saying 11 months for just an upgrade or actual installation?
The supervisor fellow I've been in touch with from the office has stopped answering my calls now.
I've called a friend and I'm hoping for some help with the situation; I already visited the Etisalat offices but all his cousins/uncles/whoevers were busy ):
Sam: OK, it's for installation, not upgrade. Funnily enough, the landline was installed almost immediately. It's an eleven month (so far) wait when I was told "less than two weeks" that I find unacceptable.
I absolutely have to report this! We hear so many complaints about service providers in Dubai that it's a refreshing change when they actually surprise us in a pleasant way!
I requested my final bill from DEWA today, asking that it be made available tomorrow at their SZR branch. I had very little hope of the SZR branch being aware I had requested the bill when I go.. er... 3-4 days later!
Lo and behold, ONE HOUR later I receive a confirmation mail from DEWA that my request has been referred to their SZR branch already and giving me a reference number for the transaction!
I just HAD to send them a note to reflect my pleasant surprise at their fast and efficient service!
4 months - that's right boys and girls. I applied on Feb 7, 2008 and got my fix on June 6, 2008. (this is in Al Falaj, Sharjah)
Apparently the installation crew rides in on tectonic plates.
I couldn't get a clear cut reason why exactly. They said they were putting a new line in. Which would be fine even if they told me ahead of time that it was a four month wait, but they kept on saying it would be two-three days.
Unlike "a blessing in tragedy" I'm all for monopolies. Just so long as I own them...

Don't worry, my post comes after they fix the problem at hand (the post is already 10k words, so I kind've need to cut it down a bit).

won't anyone answer my query about giving away of old things? You are one caring community, thanks!
Eleven months and still counting.
The very kind Customer Relations Manager hangs up whenever I phone him, and if I call back he's switched off his phone.
It took 3 faxes and uncounted number of calls plus one month of waiting to get 1Mbps upgraded to 2Mbps...

anonymous @ 09:55: Try the red cresent or similar; there was a charity shop in Karama but I really can't recall any details on it.
Did anyone notice that if you use the proxy1.emirates proxy, GChat doesn't connect, but if you disable the proxy you can use GoogleChat fine?
