I've just seen on the Gulf News website that the Metro fares have been announced.
We'll be able to buy prepaid cards which give a discount or we can buy the tickets individually for each journey.
The maximum fare for a single journey will be Dh6.5 using a standard ticket and Dh5.8 on a prepaid card.
There's a minimum fare of Dh2, or Dh1.8 with the prepaid card for a trip of up to three kilometres.
If we use the Metro we can apparently travel free on the buses using the same ticket, although the story doesn't say whether that means any bus or just getting to or from a Metro station.
There's a daily pass for Dh14 for unlimited trips on the Metro and public buses.
Children under five travel free and there's a discount for students and seniors.
The Gulf News story is here.

Very wise move and very reasonable fares!
Given that a gallon of petrol is about 6.25dhs, and 2 hours of paid parking is generally 5 dhs, the prices are very fair.
Plus think of the benefit to the environment and to your nerves when you drop your car and use your feet and the metro.
now i wish they'd find a cool name for it, otherwise we will.
london has the tube, boston has the T, i wonder if dubai will call it something like 6ee6aar al saree3!
hey Bu Jassem, how about al qadeeb al ta'er? :)
On a serious note, I'm glad the prices are very reasonable. But it seems they are uniform, weren't there different classes?
LOOOOOL DJ.. ur in a good mood
i was going to suggest something like that, but much ruder however i wanted to wait and see if the service was "taa2ir" or "7aa2ir" or (hopefully not) "naa2im"!!!
"seniors"
What seniors?
Yes, reasonable and sensible pricing.
This is good news.....very nice fares...
Oh Geeeeeee
I am so excited Cannot wait. 090909 yippppee.
Rosh, I might be able to avail of the seniors fair. Especially since I could relate so well to Seabees post regarding Sal Davies:(
People are actually excited about sitting (or standing probably) in a tin can in 50 degree heat surrounded by strangers who have probably not held a bar of soap in 6 days?
You walk outside for 3 minutes and you start to turn into a sweat fountain, can you imagine how hot, stuffy, and smelly these things are going to be?
Great suggestion ABIT.. i found a new summer job for u.. why not sell deodorant with every Metro ticket? or better still offer showers for 5 DHS.. i can set u up with some plumbers and RTA contacts..
The buses have been transporting people for over a decade. Except for the sad condition the number 13 buses were in, I personally have had very few situations where I had a problem standing/sitting in a bus. I see the train to be no different.
Sorry but Dhs 6 for a one way journey is not worth it. ABIT is right. Dhs. 20 takes you from Dubai to AD in the cheapest car.
I have a nice new light shirt and getting out of my car I already had some fancy sweat patches and now I have my own hankie to get the sweat of my face in this heat. At least I can do that in the privacy of my car rather than park it, walk to the train, and repeat the whole process when I attempt to get out of that space looking thing and walk to whichever building 1o minutes away it is that I'm going to. And do they have a luggage section in the train for all my make-up and sports outfit for the gym after work?
I think the prices are good - way better than London Underground Prices which are extotionate. Hope they have a women's only carriage though...Don't fancy being pressed against anyone's nether regions.
i*maginate:
Dubai metro is only for trips within Dubai though--dhs 6 from one edge of Dubai to the other is very reasonable considering it'd cost at least 12-16 AED in salik fees alone, the metro isn't meant to replace inter-emirate travel for now, it just within Dubai and within Dubai it is a good amount to charge, and it will be a success because of this.
How is it that the price is good. Stop comparing to London. London is not a place to compare to, it is the most expensive city on earth, and the income there is much higher than Dubai on average + benefits. In Paris the max single journey is only 1 euro + you can get packages on weekly, monthly & yearly basis, that are very much price effective, making it even cost lower than 1 euro for a single journey. The metro system in France is one of the most sophisticated systems in the world,& the distances you cross in a single journey are much greater than distances in Dubai. I think you got used to such high prices, that u find the cost of such tickets cheap!!? When u talk about metro system in Dubai, I think, blue color mostly in need & using it, & 6.5 or 5.5 AED for a single trip is pretty expensive.

I'm not saying the cost of living in France is low, which makes the Dubai metro price even more surprising. You don't get it people are only comming here on the basis of their profession, check their residence visa i.e JUST TO SAVE MONEY TO SEND BACK TO THEIR COUNTRIES. Don't compare to immigrant countries.
BUjassem, the deodorant costs more than the ticket. No one would go for it, then again, in a land where a piece of aluminum goes for 25 million, I guess anything's possible.
Anon, London is one of the most expensive cities according to various sources but I fail to see how, given the currency exchange, and the fact many places of interest (museums etc) are free to visit.
Groceries in London are better quality and similar prices - much more variety too. And you won't spot 2 cockroaches in the supermarket salad bar like I did yesterday in Dubai, or H&S would be on the case pronto.
Central London unlimited travel on all public transport is GBP 1000 p.a., (ca. Dhs6.1k) and according to the post, annual DXB Metro travel is GBP 840??? NO THANKS!
Studio in prestigious area of central London (fully furnished) only GBP 12000 p.a. compared with the same in Dubai Marina.
Ahem - even phonecalls and internet are cheaper in London!

And yet for some reason you arent in london... That either makes you a very illogical person, or an insane one to forgo all that greatness.
You choose which you are and let me know.
