UK Terror Plot, Tighter Security Measures

Just a heads up for anyone traveling over the next few days - Flights to and from the US and Britain will not allow any liquids in carry on luggage. This includes shampoo, lotions, toothpaste, and all beverages. Exceptions are made for baby formula and juice for young children. In the UK, many flights are cancelled/delayed and will not allow any carry on luggage. This also affects security at domestic airports outside the UK and the US, so check before you fly!

There are headlines and details at most major newspapers. Nothing at Gulf News yet.

It's horrific. The reasons why are understandable, but the though of travelling long haul (eg a 14 hour flight) with no eyedrops, no lip balm(?), no way to brush your teeth: it's just horrific.

I actually couldn't survive without some sort of lip moisturiser. I think I would have to get a doctor's prescription for some kind of emollient cream, or coldsore ointment, and take that on with me.

Fuck these fucking terrorists.

I just knew that getting War and Peace tattooed on my body was a good idea. Everybody mocked, but who is laughing now, eh?

In the immediate aftermath of the shoe bomber, Heathrow airport operated a policy of all footwear has to go through the X-ray machine. Until the novelty wore off. Following 9/11, in-flight meals were accompanied by plastic cutlery. And now some airlines and some classes give passengers metalwork again. Current fashion is for no liquids to be allowed in carry-on luggage. Comments relating to horses and stable doors come to mind.

As usual, the enhanced security will doubtless die off after a week or two.

(Meanwhile, how am I supposed to get my bottle of Scottish Beverage from Dubai Duty Free to London?)

I think the best solution is to ban air travel altogether. With the constant threat of being blown up, severe security measures, endless waiting hours at stinky airports surrounded by weirdos from all over the world, crowded coffin-like airplanes, and now with no access to the most basic personal items, I'm one person who wouldn't misss it.

I am glad that I am not flying now, as it would be horrible to fly that long and not have the things to make you a little more comfortable. This is what the BAA website says about the hand baggage:

Hand baggage restrictions:
These measures will prevent passengers from carrying hand luggage into the cabin of an aircraft with the following excepts (which must be placed in a plastic bag):

-pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags)
-travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets);
-prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g. diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
-spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
-contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.
-for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger), sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).
-female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes).
-tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
-keys (but no electrical key fobs)
-All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened.
-Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.
-Pushchairs and walking aids must be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs may pass through the screening point.

In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

It's not often I find myself in agreement with a certain G.W. Bush; but having seen what these wankers were planning his comment that this incident was a "stark reminder we are at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom" rings true I am afraid.

I got back this morning via JFK, which was pretty crazy. Knee high piles of make-up, perfume, liquor, various sundry lotions at the security checkpoints... it added about an extra 35 minutes to the boarding process. I can only imagine what it was like at Heathrow.

and there we have it . . it's all about education you see.
