UAE bloggers on Sharjah

The National Magazine makes reference to this blog and also to secretdubai's blog a few months ago...

"If you search for Sharjah-related posts on the various blogs at www.uaecommunity.blogspot.com, the general tone is one of disdain. The emirate is routinely described as pre-modern, primarily because of the authors’ presumption that the “decency laws” make the place as puritanical as Saudi Arabia. On www.secretdubaidiary.blogspot.com, a banned but still popular site, Sharjah is almost always referred to as “the stone-age emirate”.

I admire Sharjah for being a place where people don't roam around half naked.... The "Decency and Public Conduct Rules and Objectives" law is a great...

I will take stone age Sharjah over Dubai, and AD over em all, anyday.

Well, at least the author did their research. Sharjah could do a lot better to emphasize what it is good at and dispel some of the misconceptions about itself.

Kaya, you might take Sharjah any day, but I would have to be bound and blind-folded to live there. Some like apples, other oranges (and some both!). It shouldn't mean that the place is bad. Just not suitable for everyone.

kaya: me, not so much. i think dubai is great that it offers boths... purdah as well as free shows. lets me believe im old enough to have and make my own choice.

I have no opinion on the subject as my only visit to Sharjah was a business meeting in the airport. Generally, however on a personal note, I am unquestionably with hemlock on this one.

What's a 'purdah'?

hemlock said...

kyle: purdah
"Purdah (literally meaning "curtain") is the practice of preventing women from being seen by men. This takes two forms: physical segregation of the sexes, and the requirement for women to cover their bodies and conceal their form. Purdah exists in various forms in the Islamic world and among Hindu women in parts of India.

Thanks for the revelation. I got it.

The Qanat Al-Qasba is the only reason we visit Sharjah.

Well all comments are signed with an accessible "id", so does that say something about the subject matter? (Not enough of an adrenaline rush for SD!)

Why do we all seem fixated on comparisons with Dubai?

In Sharjah I recommend a visit to:
Aquarium, knocks DXB Mall fish tank into a cocked hat;
Natural History Museum, Sharjah Dhaid Road, good to see the indoor walkaround aviary, and desert animals in their natural setting, whilst viewing from an air conditioned environment;
Kalba as approached from the new highway, with longest tunnel in Middle East, cut through the mountains, and the unkempt mangroves beyond the pristine corniche!

(I expect I will now receive abuse for my views, as is the case on SD!)

I went to the American University of Sharjah and I absolutely loved it (mainly because I didnt have to go into Shj city a whole lot!) Once I graduated and was working, I was living in Sharjah, and that was the worst decision in my life. I eventually moved to Meadows and realized how much of a radical lifestyle change I had made. Sharjah is GREAT if you live with a family who seeks family oriented activities, but for a single guy, Dubai is the place to be because Sharjah is stifling. Anyways, I still remember very fondly as you enter Rolla 'Smile, you are in Sharjah.' LOL!

I'm guessing those nasty 'stone-age' hounds have not taken an effort to know the Emirate. It has a soul, a sense of identity and culture, and has much to offer. Living in SHJ, you get the best of both worlds.

@ hemlock
What to do! Us old folks like our retirement homes. Lived in Sharjah, lived in Dubai, lived in many places arounds the world.
As Dubai Entrepreneur says about apples and oranges.
At this point in my life I like AD the best. Its been good to me.

I have family in sharjah, I never visit them, 1. they are... stupid. Poeple from sharjah are the type that believe Israel is poisoning the bread they buy because they were told so in an office email.

And the traffic! God I had to go to a wedding once and it took me FIVE hours to get there from Abu Dhabi. Mind you only took and hour and a half to get to City Center-ish in Dubai. God I hate Sharjah.

^^ umm...is that comment from the dudy, who thinks being pregnant (procreation) is foolish & horrific?

Yes it was. When Im not on my own computer I dont log into anything.

And it is foolish. sponsor kids... or adopt. No need to bring more poor souls into this hell of a world.

Sharjah is a great place to live and enjoy yourself. I have lived here for nearly three years now and just love the fact that I can travel to Dubai with a short drive (depending on the time of the day)
