TEDx Comes To Dubai

TED is an amazing initiative to share ideas globally.

I was very excited to get this email last night from James Piecowye of Zayed University (he also hosts Nightline on Dubai Eye):
The spirit of the TED is coming to Dubai for the first TEDx Dubai Conference, October 10th.

The official TED Event is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about.

“TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future.

To learn and experience TED , log on here .

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx.

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

TED has licensed Giorgio Ungania and me (James Piecowye) to run and organize the first TEDx event ever in the United Arab Emirates.

We are building the event as we speak and we are already talking with world renowned thinkers that have agreed to participate on October 10th.

'TED' is one of those things the more you read about the more confused you get.

At least that was the case with me.

Really? What do you find confusing?

Dubai Jazz: Same here. I still have no idea wtf it is about.

Many things Susan, but never mind. Maybe it's just not for me.

Well, it's basically a very simple concept.

People who are experts/thinkers/"doers" in their fields get together at "think-tank-like" conferences to share ideas/tell the stories of their lives, experiences.

Each speaker has 18 minutes to share their "idea worth spreading" in a "talk."

The talks, which are usually powerfully inspirational, are videotaped and made available for free to people around the world (i.e. they are downloadable and embeddable).

TED conferences have been held in the USA annually since 1984; they have become ever larger in both the number of speakers and the number of delegates.

The talks were initially focussed on Technology, Education and Design (thus TED), but the scope has broadened over the years.

The objective of the TED movement is to inspire people to greatness, make positive change and well, obviously, share ideas.

At the core of the TED initiative is the belief that sharing powerful ideas can change attitudes, lives and ultimately the world.

TED is now encouraging people to hold similar conferences (called TED x) around the world to make the TED experience available to ever greater numbers of people.

TEDx Dubai is one of those. It will be held October 10.

The TED site (http://www.ted.com has 400 amazing videos of talks given by some of the world's foremost thinkers and doers.

The talks explore a huge array of fascinating topics and ideas - from prostetic limbs and rain forests to the role of religion in the modern world. New talks are being added all the time.

It's a lot like a blog in which all the contributors are undisputed experts, and all the readers/subscribers share a passion for making the world a better place.

I hope that helps :)

amazingsusan, be extra amazing and post details of every event in the UAE, or, for that matter, every other 'exciting' email you get about 'amazing initiatives'.

Hi Susan,
Thanks for explaining. It looks like an open-source, wikipedia-like thing except that it deals with talks instead of typed entries.

Will download the videos once they are up and free at the website :P

Great idea! May not be able to share EVERY event and email due to time constraints, but will try my best :)

Hey DJ,

I've sent you an email (address from your profile) with some TED Talk video links.

Did you get it? If not, can you send me alternate email address please?

Thanks :)
