Charles suggests McDonalds ban

"LONDON - Prince Charles suggested Tuesday on a visit to the United Arab Emirates that banning McDonald's fast food was crucial for improving people's diets, a British news agency reported.

Charles made the comments while visiting the Imperial College London Diabetes Center in Abu Dhabi for the launch of a public health campaign, The Press Association reported.

"Have you got anywhere with McDonald's? Have you tried getting it banned? That's the key," Charles was quoted as asking one of the center's nutritionists.

A McDonald's spokesman, Nick Hindle, called the remark disappointing. He said other members of the royal family "have probably got a more up-to-date picture of us," alluding to reports that Charles' son, Prince Harry, was spotted eating a chicken burger at McDonald's in 2005."

Leaving aside the anti-freedom aspects of this idea, which are bad enough, this is a horrible idea for practical reasons as well.

Perhaps it is different in England, but in the US McDonald's is now is doing much more in the way of healthier options (salads, fruit instead of french fries for kids meals, etc) than most of the other fast food chains. See, for example, Hardee's Monster Thick Burger. So banning McDonald's would only drive the fast food customer to worse options.

I'm always astonished that anyone would eat McDonlads or any "fast" food at all. It tastes disgusting, its processed to within an inch of being plastic and the box it comes in has more nutritional value. Its not even that fast. Where we live there's a KFC almost next door to a Mashawi (Lebanese), at Mashawi the food is fast, fresh, delicious and cheap and yet the KFC next door is always full of locals. Bizarre. Why would you chose a Mcanything over a freshly grilled shish tawouk?

Man, that is so lame. And why is he holding a grudge only against McDonalds? What about Burger King, KFC, and Hardees? Why is it any of his business at all? It's your choice whether you want to eat at McDonalds or not. Doesn't he have more serious issues to attend to? If you're dumb enough to stuff yourself with junk food every single day and wonder why you get fat, why doesn't he just ban dumb people then?!

Hey anonymous@9.40pm. Are you offering you opinion? But Charles isn't allowed to offer his?

I also like the fact that you are focusing on him saying 'McDonald's' and complaining about them being singled out, instead of realising (like anyone with half a brain would) that he was attacking the fast food industry as a whole, and that McDonald's is often used as a lazy metaphor for fast food.

You're also conveniently ignoring the fact that it was an off the cuff remark, and not part of a speech.

I agree. The smell of McDonalds makes me so sick that I actually feel nauseous walking past an open restaurant (eg a food court) and being in the lift with someone carrying a McTakeaway makes me gag.

Whereas Lebanese/Arabic food is not only amazingly varied, it is also incredibly tasty. And if you have a craving for something less salady, more carby, you can always go for a saj or a manakish. And you're still putting fairly decent nutrition into your body compared to clown meat.

I just love it! He's getting as bad as his dad when it comes to "foot in mouth" disease. By the time he's king he'll be a barking mad, full-blown eccentric. So much more interesting than his mum.
