Explosion & fire at Al Quoz

A fireworks factory in Al Quoz had an explosion around 7am, followed by a huge fire which at 9am the fire service is still fighting.

One person is reported killed and another injured. The story is still developing, so let's hope that no-one else has been hurt.

UPDATE

I'm afraid Civil Defence now say two people died, plus one seriously injured.

They're also saying "illegal fireworks factory". And that up to 100 warehouses/buildings are on fire or damaged.

Medical advice is to stay indoors because of the chemicals in the air.

Everytime there is a big explosion they say its a fireworks factory, why do they have fireworks factories in UAE if selling fireworks is illegal? has anyone seen fireworks made in UAE ? ?

Don't fireworks just blow up and that's it? And I didn't see any sparklers.

I'm no expert, but the really dark smoke bellowing out for more than two hours now points to burning chemicals.

They're now saying "illegal fireworks factory" and the radio has listed some of the chemicals in fireworks - with doctors advice to stay indoors if you can.

Nick, yes they explode, but that causes fires in the stored chemicals and other flammable material. Neighbouring buildings are now on fire, many destroyed or damaged according to news reports.

The photos look quite scary and sort of reminiscent of the fire at a buildingon SZR - about the same time last year.

SeaBee, Gulf News says it's a warehouse and not a factory.

What pisses me off is the effect it has on traffic.

People, please please please, just get on with your business and get to our offices instead of making everyone else wait so you can satisfy your curiosity.

D.E. I didn't see it for myself but I heard the traffic was due to road blocks being in place?

i*maginate,

Nope, not on SZR anyway. There were a few accidents because of people looking at the smoke and not driving their moving cars..

Just absolute idiocy.
