St. Mary's Church...

Has anyone been to St. Mary's Church lately? I passed it by today on my way to a meeting in that area and saw the entire area barricaded and police cars at every entrance. You can't park anywhere near the area, and I'm guess you'll be frisked trying to enter.

Rumor has it that there was a bomb scare hence the extra protection. Can anyone confirm this or give a full story?

Dubai: Extra security measures at churches continue to remain in place in Jebel Ali and Oud Mehta Road.

Parking areas at churches in both places have been cordoned off by police.

"Dubai Police have made alternative parking arrangement 200 yards from the church premises in Jebel Ali," said Daniel Thomas, Pastor of Mar Thoma church in Jebel Ali.

The pastor said the police had requested the church to cooperate for the routine security measures.

I heard similar rumour/story - not sure how true. Signs of changing times I suppose.....whatever it takes to keep the city safe.

Had an email sent round at work today. Apparently there have been threats against the new christian church in Qatar and they are policing churches in the region just in case. Expected to continue through easter.

I have noticed an increase in police nearby mosques in Jumeirah . There seems to be a police car at every mosque in Jum. I was wondering what that is all about.

I'm all for building churches.. and it's really a sad time when you have to worry about THREATS to churches on muslim soil.

We should be ashamed of ourselves if any christian gets harmed in the UAE, after all they are our predecessors and the people of the book. On top of that, any person of faith deserves to seek sanctuary in his or her house of choice.

I agree with Buj, it's a shame that church going folks have to worry about security.

Me thinks that whoever is found out to be planning to hurt church goers should be impaled in public.

am not for building churches but if they are built they need to be protected. Last thing we need here is a psycho who want to bomb those worshiping areas !!

BuJ,

couldn't agree more with you, especially if you extended your welcome to 'the other' people of the book and agreed that a few synagogues be built.

Nick,

I agree with you and would welcome Synagogues as well but at the moment Zionism is linked to Judaism and I have great reservations about the former.

Regards,

BuJ

How do you distinguish between the police providing security to protect Christians at Easter and goverment sanctioned harassment of non-Muslims? If a Martian landed at St. Mary's, could he tell the difference?

I heard worse rumours (maybe not rumours) but can't remember them now.
