The reason why every year, dozens of international - and local - journalists visiting Dubai Air Show stumble into the wrong bog:
Compare and contrast with what local men and women actually wear:
God only knows how confused Michael Jackson would be.

come on, the signs are cute.
Its strange how a Filipino was recently arrested for dressing as a woman and wanting to get a manicure at a saloon, while Michael Jackson (a certified pervert) still gets treated like the self made 'king' that he thinks he is.
There isnt a problem with the signs, just with that Wacko.
Whats coming out of the MALE sign's nose? Or is that his bubble, in that case if he wanted to say something what would he say?
So these toilets? They are only for locals? Is that a dress code for the toilets?
What if I mild mannered middle class subcon housewife wish to use the loo?
the signs are not a local thing. they are just for stupid locals. they figured westerners would be able to figure it out(forget about michael until we know WHAT he really is) but a local? god help him/her with international signs.
I have to admit that I've stumbled into the wrong loos with those signs before. Spice Island had them. Easily done after enjoying a few.
Cept Mike hadn't enjoyed a few, we think. Given he is reported to have been dressed like the lady on the left, you'd think he'd head for the "black" toilet.
Oh, but I forgot...he's white, isn't he?
TOILETKAMER VIR BLANKES....
The Moroccan restaurant, Tagine, at the Royal Mirage, has similar signage. But the food is fabulous. Secretdubai - I stand corrected on my assertion that there is no truly good restaurant in Dubai.
Really? I am glad to hear you had a good experience there - I found the food extremely bland and disappointing both times I went, and hear similar negative reviews from friends.
Food apart, the setting and and service there is great, so one can still have a very enjoyable evening.
My favourite restaurant is the Summer Garden Chinese at Metropolitan, eating Aromatic Crispy Duck ;)
what is so confusing about it??? or is it becoz it's culturally related it became stupid
It's stupid becuase it's inverted - can't you see all the four pictures above?
Men here tend to wear white headdresses, women black - hence the confusion.
A friend of mine was reading this blog and she pointed out that she found it offensive to see Sheikh/Sheikha's photographs underneath toilet signs. She didn't want to make a comment about it and be accused of 'picking' an argument, but I was wondering if anyone else shared her view?
CG: I was worried about that, which was why I altered the original images (which had the word "toilet" underneath in Arabic and English) and just put the heads.
I feel this is a fair compromise. Nothing specifically bathroom-related is being shown, just the silhouette heads of a man and woman that happen to have been used on a bathroom sign.
The aim was to show the headdresses. I used the pics of Zayed and Lubna because they are (1) so nice looking and (2) it seemed fairer to use "iconic" pictures than ones of random people from Google Images that I didn't know.
I also think it's one of the loveliest pics of Zayed I've ever seen ;)
All this said - this is a public blog - and your friend has every right to express her opinion, so tell her not to be scared in future. But please pass on to her that I was aware there might be a sensitivity, which is why I removed the signage-text from the original images.
