As with all online communities, people are a bit nastier than they are in real life. I wouldn't make such a big deal out of it.

There's good & bad every where, learn to ignore them.

Here’s a big shout welcoming you to the UAE Community Blog.

Mark,

Take it from 2 girls who are constantly lambasted in the blogosphere: let barking dogs bark.

Let me chime in too... with the same sentiment. Just let it go. I don't think a comment like that is much of a big deal. And the Springs is a nice place to live, so you have to accept that some people will be envious!

Sorry about the rude comment - I note that one was deleted, and there is still one rather rude anonymous comment on.

Do bear in mind that such anonymous people are really not worth taking very seriously. I thought your introduction was very pleasant and I have no clue why someone would take issue with mentioning The Springs.

Had you said: "a penthouse apartment in the Burj Dubai with solid gold taps and diamond windows" then, sure, I could understand a little ribbing ;)

But you didn't, so the person was just being rude, which I think says more about their insecurity complex and shoulder chips than anything else.

Oh yeah and credit to the "anonymous" above giving a better reputation to anonymouses everywhere ;)

Mark,
great to have you on board! :-) Better get used to some nasty comments in this blogosphere, just have a look at what SD is putting up with. Your pen name may raise some tempers around here and trust me that none of those “cowards” will have a look at the explanation paragraph on your website. Yeah, I remember the 80ties and certainly have to admit envying you for living in the Springs. :- )
Cheers from Hamburg (Germany)

Mark: it seems you're pretty new to this interweb thingy.

Rule number 1: get a thicker skin. Letting the anonymous idiots bother you is the worst thing you can do.

Actually, it's the second worst thing you can do. The worst thing is to show others that it bothers you, like you did with this post.

98% of the internet is a "kill or be killed" environment. DO NOT show weakness in public, you'll get eaten alive. I learned this first-hand a dozen years ago, and it still applies.

Skeptic Al, good advice.

Mark, don't allow anybody to ruin your ideas. Maintain continuity and don't disappear, ok?

One more thing Mark, you have a great blog :) Will comment as soon as I get down to it. Cheers :)

er, should your blog not be called 'words of A sgt.' and not 'aN sgt.' ??

or am I missing some new spelling rule here?

Anonymous said...

nick,

I think if you are going to spell it out S, g, t. then you may need an 'AN'. Either way, nobody would, so it shouldn't be there -- unless our author here has a reason why it is how it is.

Never heard the phrase "(he) doth protest too much, methinks", have you?

Sometimes, less is more.

Hello Mark - Ahlan to UAE CB - you have a nice blog. Please do not take some anons too seriously :)

" Your pen name may raise some tempers around here "

Seven summits - can you really blame them for all of it?

Sorry Mark - my query is not towards your blog name, but towards ss's comment.

ROSH,
Of course not - assuming that you meant “do I blame the natural inhabitants around the Persian Gulf to come up with a negative connotation in regards to a military title in the blog name” – correct?

Personally I do not agree with any foreign intervention whatsoever. Change must be endemic and can never be imposed from outside, especially if it is meant to be sustainable. Some may find it unethical, but from my experience (which is quite a lot), I cannot support either development assistance or any form of "humanitarian intervention", because it seldom leads to achieving the intended objectives.
The paradox is that policy impositions from Western nations (yes all of us combined - we are all equally involved!) have frequently failed (even if we hate to admit it), due to the fact that they are insensible to the cultural, religious and historical peculiarities of the recipient countries. Consequently peace-building, reconstruction and general development efforts without some form of local participation are likely to create cognitive dissonance among the local population. (And the willingness to participate is simply often not there, no matter how much we wish for it – a good example would be the attempt to stimulate scientific research in the GCC!) It is a complex topic and certainly not within the scope of a “community blog”. :-)

My advice to Mark would be to change his pen name for the “UAE Community blog” to avoid any unnecessary aggression – maybe to something that does not have any meaning in the region whatsoever like my own. While Westerners can easily associate my pen name with a meaning and a character profile, it will mean absolutely nothing to the vast majority of bloggers in our concerned region. If however you will shorten it to SS it will certainly be downgraded to a political symbol (which by the way is not very nice) and I hope you did not do this intentionally? So once again back to something more positive - my tolerance plea for you on sexy Hooters girls in the United Blogging Emirates blog.
Cheers :-)

I was oblivious to the abbreviation until I googled it up, given your comment above - hence - no, it wasn't intentional.

"my tolerance plea for you on sexy Hooters girls in the United Blogging Emirates blog. "

Respectfully - my tolerance plea towards you, try and better understand this part of the world. It takes much time, better perspective & lotsa patience.

Cheers :)

On those very wise words, I am going to close commenting for this post. Partly because an anonymous troll keeps posting the same stupid comment, and partly because I think the discussion has reached a nice conclusion, thanks to rosh, seven and others.
