Now it's The Universe

The world wasn't big enough for Nakheel - they've just announced 'The Universe', a huge new offshore development.

There's not a lot of information yet but they say it will take 15 to 20 years to complete, will add 3,000 hecares of new land and it will stretch from Palm Jumeirah to Port Rashid, running between The World and the mainland.

I guess the phrase 'less is more' wasn't really considered

Hot off the press:

Nakheel has just released a press statement that Dubai will be re-branded as 'Maldives 2.0', or 'The Galaxy'- whichever is bigger.

They are not sure if the Galaxy has a public sewer therefore it will be omitted until further notice or completion, whichever is later.

Mr. Douglas Adams has been appointed Chief of Design.

I even liked the International City project. Atleast it is affordable for a normal person.

Dubai Dude, IC is appropriately priced for its location, which is quite definitely in the outskirts of Dubai. If you could class that as "affordable", more people would be living in Dxb than in neighbouring emirates, where rents are lower.

Lastly, I would say the concept of "normality" in Dubai is highly impossible!

Does anyone know if Salik will also be on the Universe? Or is it "in" the Universe...slightly confoosed!

@Real Nick: do not malign the great man - in real life he would have had nothing to do with madness of this kind (good idea for a story though).

@uma por dia: Sustainable? No, nothing in Dubai is sustainable, barring the invention of a super-cheap energy source and a reversal of rising sea-levels. I'm sure Sh Mo is working on that.

There is something strange in the map.
The Palm of Deira seems to have swollen a little bit around its trunk. I don’t remember it to be this dense when I first saw the initial map…

After all, Dubai developments may not be sustainable, but they might still have a better feature; the ultimate organic growth….

When will this torture of the sea stop? Do we expect nature to never retaliate back while we keep on messing with it?

I feel Dubai has become over-obsessed with water & I am afraid over-obsession with anything almost always leads to disaster. God help us.

And btw, it's not Douglas Adam, it's Frank Herbert of the 'Dunes'.

You've got to be kidding. Someone at Nakheel must be on drugs. That is just ugly. Create beautiful islands in the shape of this and that and then fill in all the open water that surrounds it. That makes no sense.

rosh said...

Am sorry, but that universe "thing" is just butt ugly, and beyond. Hope Nakheel scraps it.

Maybe Nakheel is pulling a fast one on everybody in this Community just to see how we all freak out!

Maybe, they're all having a laugh at us, as we post here!

And, we're doing it right!

Anything's possible at Dubai, Inc., oops I meant Catalyst, Inc!

Oh my F hell. Now let's just wait for the Big Bang...and the universe to end!

jazz, the original plan for Palm Deira, as usual for Dubai, was dramatically changed to something quite different.

I feel very sick.

cg dahling, don't feel sick! Ingest some Vitamin W...you might get to purchase 'down under' at a discount!

Another fundamental point ppl have missed is the fact that the U is now placed in a position that residents on the palms and the world will have their view of the coastline/Burj obscured.

The World was positioned (physically and in marketing terms)to be the most exclusive of all these developments - exclusivity on an island means there is ample distance between your neighbours. That prob won't be the case anymore.

Well i*maginate, it's like what we say in Arabic: 'reze2 al hebel 3al almajaneen'

converting the islands into a bunch of canals.. i'd be pretty unhappy.. but i wonder how good itll all smell.. how do u keep waterways clean when u have that many maxis destined to park throughout them

hey btw, i was really a big fan of dubai marina.. it's better to dig out land and allow a marina to form than to bury the sea.

secondly.. if salik is implimented on the universe.. then imagine the headlines... "RTA CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE"
