Carnage Q

Is it just me (and Mars) - or anyone else think those cars in flames given the carnage on the 11th (see pictures on post below) quite puzzling? Am confused how several vehicles, caught fire? It seems they were up in flames on impact or something? The flames seem to be on the cars, and not spread across the highway - which should be the case perhaps given leaking petrol?

Am I missing something? Thoughts appreciated.

Rosh, while looking at the pictures, there is lots of fuel spilt on the ground, which might have helped expanding the blaze.

And then maybe when other cars caught fires, their dry interior was the most vulnerable to the blaze (upholstery, leather or fabric seats, mats, plastic padding..).. and so this is maybe why the flames emerged from the windows and as you said, looked like the flammable material looked like it had been thrown onto the cars...

...I am not sure though, you need a forensics expert to confrim this...

I posted on this a few times in the past, we seem to have many more fires in crashes than other countries.

I guess this particular one was maybe down to fuel spilled on the road from cracked tanks, then sparks from more collisions...

In some of the photos, you'll see that the fog has lifted, indicating that it is some time after the accident happened. I would suspect that this fire had been raging for some time and in time the cars themselves were providing most of the combustible matter.
