Dubai Marina traffic gridlock

Just a heads-up if you have to travel to or through Dubai Marina...allow at least 45 minutes extra for the journey. At least for the next few days.

The area on Al Sufouh Road outside Mina Seyahi and Marina Phase 1 is chaotic and traffic is horrendous. Twice today, early and late-morning, I sat there for over 40 minutes travelling less than two kilometres.

They've changed the main traffic signal intersection as you come out past Phase 1 onto Al Sufouh Road to a temporary roundabout, the sequence of the surrounding signals has been changed and their timing also changed. They've also closed half the road and traffic towards the free zone is now on the 'wrong' side of the road.

And one of the new flyovers being built as part of the monster new Intersection 5 has opened unexpectedly. I don't know where the traffic comes from but it's coming out at the small traffic signal junction at Marina Heights tower. The junction is a small local one and can't cope - so bet your life that will soon be dug up and changed to something else.

As you would expect, it was done overnight with no warning and there are no signs to help anyone, so there's a lot of confusion adding to the problem. It may all settle down in a few days but for the moment, be warned.

Nice summary of the problem seabee.

I got stuck in this for 20 minutes today at midday. Seems like I will be driving down to Ibn Battuta and doing a u-turn there. It was taking 45 minutes to go through this new roundabout this morning.

I really hope it is only for a few days and not a few months.

If this is happening now I wonder what it'll be like once JBR is occupied and the 10 tallest residential towers are built in the upper marina.

as a two year resident of marina, this story is not very true. it's little true. it about a week that they are changing the road on the both sides before DIC. by the time when these temp constructions are finished, i hope it gets better.

Yep, the long way via Ibn Battuta is what I'll be doing too - I hope no-one else is reading this or that'll be jammed too :-(

I'm gonna try getting to Knowledge Village another way tomorrow...and leave way earlier!

This reminds me why I like living in Abu Dhabi. For example, traffic was unusually heavy heading to work this morning (from Tourist Club to Umm al Nar, about 18 km), and my commute was lengthened from the usual 20 minutes to 30...

It is a mess, but it's all part of the big new interchange work. Obviously they are working on it as fast as they can, thus detours and workarounds that change almost weekly. That being said, I've never seen such a big interchange get built so fast.

I think the point everyone would make is...forward planning.

They were well aware several years ago that they were building 10,000 plus units at the springs, greens etc and that they were building 200 plus towers at the marina.

They decided to upgrade the intersection now?
