Dubai the 'Sudden City'

Looks like Jan is the month for Dubtown to dance across global headlines, the City that Scares has hit the mark once again. The National Geographic story shows Dubai in a positive light, but some of the related photos do paint a rather nasty picture - Look at this one Photo - 17

This is all rather too sudden for me though :D

Dubai has done a lot.. in some ways it's should learn from its mistakes, and in other ways it's a model for others.. either way there is short-term disadvantages that pale in comparision to the long-term advantages if things are done and good leadership is sustained over a long time such that trends become stable.

Agreed, there are several positive aspects to the emirate, but the negatives can/will negate the positives.

The general opinion (which I share) is that, the building boom is getting craziner by the minute and threatening to destabilize the economy.

Dude...that 'general opinion' is getting stale by the minute. Each and every aspect of our lives has changed because of one thing. Construction. Whatever you think of...you end up like a dog chasing it's tail. It's time we gave it a rest...

The leadership in Dubai is sustained over a long time because challenging it is a criminal offence.

January is a quiet month for news. This kind of story gets pulled off the shelf when things slow down. Nothing new here..not even in the comments. Damn, are well getting too complacent?

yeah, nothing like a picture of drudge workers stepping over and around sewage to make you wonder what the real cost of the towers is.

All that building will be for nothing if rent control isn't kicked up a few notches, and rents are dropped back down. Everyone will live elsewhere and work in Dubai, causing even more massive traffic headaches. And I'm not convinced the tram is going to solve them.
