Burj Al Arabi

Did you catch that? Its Arabi not Arab, a new tower for Dubai in the shape of a man. Gulf News reports,
The structure will in fact be a 35-storey tower designed to resemble a man dressed in traditional Gulf Arab dress yet another remarkable landmark set to hit Dubai's skyline... Mohammad Al Syoufi, chairman of Dubai-based project developers AAA Group, said he wanted to create an icon which would rival the famous Burj Al Arab.

Won't the Burj Dubai satisfy that quest? I thought I'd reserve judgment until I saw the render, which I have found posted at Skyscrapercity.com.

Hmm, not bad... at least it looks more like a building than a man, and the resemblance is clever. How many of you were imagining the Pillsbury Dough Boy in a gown? Waiting now for Burj Al Abaya.

I was horrified when I read the story - without render - imagining what a monstrosity it would be. In fact I was reasonably pleasantly surprised when I saw the render later. It's not anywhere near as bad as it could have been.

I just fixed the picture size for you, it was forcing the page wide.

I wonder if there will be a discount (or even a premium?) for having an apartment located in its nether regions?

;)

What a waste of space, money, effort.

It's revolting.

Dubai really is where the architects come to offload their weird ideas.

Yes, but does it transform?

And BD, I was thinking more Staypuft Marshmallow man...it might be more apt...

What's next? Burj Al Abaya? Oh no, wait... unless they are married they can't be seen on the same skyline...

Very interesting. I see a new branch of fashion industry springing up to dress the buildings and sooner or later we will also see cross dressing buildings. Someday some bright minded builder will come up with a city-wide fashion parade showcasing buildings dressed in the latest trends.

Thankfully it's reported today that the design has not been approved by, nor even submitted to, the Master Developer.

Who or what is this Master Developer?

I rather like it. Let's face it, it's "very Dubai". It reminds me of the Emirates training building just over Garhoud Bridge which is now almost lost amongst all the newer construction.

Oh. My. God.

It's like a giant PEZ dispenser.

Or the entrance to LegoLand Arabia.

if anything's going to make potential Dubai investors turn on their heels and run as fast as they can in the opposite direction, this HAS to be it...
it belongs in Global Village or in a theme park!
