UAE's First Krispy Kreme Opens In Dubai Despite High Obesity Rate

US doughnut and coffee chain Krispy Kreme opened its first UAE outlet in the Deira City Center shopping mall yesterday, the first of seven stores planned for the country this year.

According to the company's nutritional webpage, one Krispy Kreme glazed sour cream doughnut boasts 340 calories, and an original glazed doughnut has 4 grams of trans fats. Some varieties have as much as 7 grams (apple fritters). Trans fats are known to increase risk of heart disease, diabetes and are also linked to obesity and liver dysfunction.

The doughnuts store opens despite the fact that the UAE currently holds one of the highest obesity rates in the world - higher than the United States - because of easy access to high calorie foods and a sedentary lifestyle. One in five adults in the region also suffers from one of the many obesity-related illnesses, diabetes. In the UAE, 74% of women are obese or overweight according to a 2005 report by the International Obesity Task Force, a London-based think tank.

I went there today morning, and the line was long, and made me wonder whether it was just the hype or not. I took a box, and they were giving out free donuts to everyone too. Let me tell you how awesome and tasty the donuts were...forget all the other donut shops, Krispy Kreme is here to stay!!!

As a former resident of North Carolina, I warn you now: Krispy Kreme is more addictive than crack and heroin combined. Your only hope is never to eat there. My family is already begging me to drive to Dubai just to get a taste of these donuts - after almost two years without them.

krispy kreme likes to go where the fatties are; it's part of their marketing strategy, though usually they go for the poorer neighborhoods, as obesity (in the us anyway -- http://dir.salon.com/story/books/review/2003/01/09/fat/index.html ) disproportionately affects the poor (think how cheap junk food and sodas are). and because they're so incredibly yummy, expect the obesity rate in dubai to spike even more. happy eats.

1. Dunken Donuts (or however you spell it) is way better than this crap. Krispy Kreme has WAY too much everything. I like sugar, not that much sugar. I like cream, not that much cream, and I also like my internal organs in a functioning state so I dared not even though them. my brother on the other hand had 1/2 a box and loved them.

2. 70-something percent of woman in the UAE, not UAE woman. Emaratias are at an "ideal" for their hight... or to me, anorexic. they could use a donut every now and then.

Since most things seem oversized (or over the top) in Dubai these days - just what UAE needs to oversize it's people.

Somebody please help get rid of this thing! I agree with Brn - Krispy Kreme is more addictive than crack, and there is no turning back, so be cautious, one can lead to too many : )

Krispy Kreme is indeed the crack of donuts.

As I've said elsewhere, if there's a Donut's Anonymous sign me up. I expect to see Homer Simpson there too.

I lived in the United States for 10 years and ever since I took my first step there, Krispy Kreme was there where many of my friends used to pay frequent visits ordering dozen glazed + a free fresh one when entering the shop.

Like brn said, it's addictive and dangerous. But that won't matter, will it? KK is here to stay and supersize the people ... one more brand of a long list of junk food ...

Perhaps Dubai (and the rest of the Emirates) should take a pre-emptive step towards this?
