Dinglish

In a week where the world seems to be going to hell in a handbasket, take a minute for some light relief, courtesy of 7 Days. Of their examples of "Dubai English", my personal favourites are:-

Ahlanification - The process of an everyday expat discovering his or her inner Paris Hilton through the party pages of local magazines.

jane drain - The migration of long-term expats from Jumeirah to the exurbs of the Springs and the Greens.

my friend - A total stranger.

However I'm sure we can come up with some equally good or better examples. My contribution is:

next week, madam - it'll never happen

Over to you . . . .

'not coming in Dubai' - I can't be bothered to get one from the back room.

'cinema' - large dark room with comfy chairs where one goes in order to converse with one's friends by mobile phone.

'not on his seat' - (i) just nipped to the loo,
(ii) just stepped out for a fag break,
(iii) left yesterday for a month's vacation.
The correct definition inevitably depends on hw urgently you need to talk to someone.

'parking space' - an area approximately 5.5m x 5.5m that inexplicably has a white line painted across its middle.
