Great timing

Aggregating blogs in Greece could get you arrested:
The administrator of Blogme.gr, a Greek blog aggregation website had his house raided, his hard drive seized and was himself arrested by the Greek cybercrime division last week, after having been served with a libel lawsuit without prior notice, because a public figure was offended by a satirical blog that was linked to by his site. The outraged response by Greek bloggers was immediate and unprecedented, reaching in the hundreds of posts within two days of the raid.

The developing story coincides with the Internet Governance Forum being hosted in Athens this week, to be attended by Internet luminaries, entrepreneurs and activists like Vint Cerf, Bob Kahn and Joi Ito and featuring panels on Openness and Freedom of Expression.

Could something like this happen in the UAE? I doubt it.

This could happen if the "right" person was annoyed by a blog. Lets say that the minister of Higher Education is annoyed at the blog post that I am working on about ADU. nothing would happen, he is a high ranking member of the government, but not high enough (a minister in the UAE has a govt grade of about 17, which is high, but seeing how my father is a 16, in 2 years he'll be the same - in grade - as a minister) and thus nothing would happen.

Now, if say, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed, who is the head guy at ADU gets annoyed... I should be scared, a little, he'll probably make a few phone calls and my father will call me up asking me to stop it. he asks me to stop a lot of things.

Now, in the case that I piss off someone like Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, or Mohammed Bin Rashid (in dubai's case) It's been nice knowing you and I'll be out whenever they get to me and if any of you care to call the UN they'll never find me.

So yes, it could happen, but you would have to piss someone off as much as say, Arabtimes pisses the ruling family off.

As The Sun put it several years back when a load of Brits were arrested in Greece for photographing aircraft:

Greece is a tinpot, shambles of a place.

a blessing in tragedy

Why exactly does arabtimes.com piss people off in .ae ?

Am looking at it atm, but err its in arabic and not sure why it pisses people off... well apart from the CIA recruitment banner in the middle of the page, that may rub some people the wrong way.
