Local Newspapers Upset About "7Days" Article

Looks like the article published in 7Days titled (Redressing The Balance) had made alot of UAE locals angry. Some readers went to the extend of demanding the shut down of the newspaper. If you can read Arabic, then you can read what has been said about the article in Albayan, Alittihad, & Alemarat Alyoum newspapers.

Apparently 7Days misquoted the words of the president H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to (Al Sharq Alawsat) newspaper. The president talked to the newspaper about placing qualified national workers in the place of temporary workers who are only in the country for a limited number of years. 7Days reacted in its article as if the president was talking about replacing migrating workers when he was talking about temporary workers.

UPDATE (11/24/06): Alemarat Alyoum published an article in its first page titled (Journalism when it breaks human rights). It's in Arabic. 7Days is really in deep trouble!

Hi Fahad, I am not too proud of my Arabic reading skills, hence could you please help translate some of the comments?

I am interested to know more about the local sentiments, expressed in these newspaper blogs.

Perhaps I missed something in the 7days article on "Redressing the balance". It talked about full scale Emiritization going forward, so am confused, why Emirati's would be upset?

The local Arabic newspapers took what has happened as a good excuse to attack 7days.

What 7days has done wasnt smart either. They made it look as if Sheikh Khalifa the UAE president said things he never said in the article.

It wasnt only that, they always offend the locals with their articles.

Once they encourage the authorities to let a racist band to come to the UAE. In other cases it protest against banning a homosexual movie. Then we see them asking females to act like bitches.

and the list goes...

if they want to move on they should start by respecting the Emiratis.

Anonymous said...

touchy!but then again i read the whole article & i didn't really understand it!

samuraisam said...

"Once they encourage the authorities to let a racist band to come to the UAE."
If I recall correctly; That was the band Saxon; and the entire 'racist' title was based upon a single song they wrote about the crusades.

What I can't believe is people asking for the newspaper to be shut down. Amazing. Why don't they just merge it with Emirates Today so people can be 'told' what to read rather than read and share whatever opinions they may have.

7days never talks about expatriots and their weekend drinking, gambling and heist cases and fly away.

You arrive into this xxx country, you have to respect the locals and the law, if that's too difficult for you, you can always pack up and go back to your rat hole.

Let's not forget their prostitution business, god knows what kinda disease they carry.

How many expatriate will stay in Dubai, if they decide to ban alcohol, tobacco and nightclubs ?

So what!!! Do you really think that UAE is far from being racist. And before anyone jumps at me I am talking about the system. They hate Iraqis and especially Iraqi women so I don't get why now all this fuss!

@ fellow atheist

how about putting ur real name and phone number so that we fucken idiot Emirati call the police to see u deported in no time?

I personally dont want 7days to be shutdown but I want them to start respecting the Emiratis.

That is no encouraging to legalize prostitution, homosexuality or any kind of indecency. No starting a campaign against the Emiratis as they did when the labourer minister ordered that HR managers have to be Emiratis.

I appreciate their effort in making a connection between the Emirati and expat community.

I appreciate their effort in publishing crimes that wouldnt be published in other newspaper.

I appreciate their effort in making the community aware of the problems in the city like prostition, salaries based on colour or nationality .......

I appreciate their professional journalism

was intrigued by one albayan reader asking in th ecomments for 7days to be "executed" i.e. closed! I have hardly anything good to say about 7days, which is a tabloid rag, and obviously in the article that caused the allof this they blindred big time. But the reaction of local newspapers smacks of vendetta and a lust for censorship rather than rational dialogue. what's most amazing is that they refuse to accept the newspaper's apology! Are they that perfect?

I don't care if the offended is Emirati or Martian. Taking offense and rallying against a newspaper like this to restrict what little freedom is available is just stupid. I was not under the impression that the UAE was in the habit of deporting those who thought some things were stupid. They may as well evacuate the entire country.

Migrant/temporary worker? What's the difference? Everyone is temporary. Something got lost in translation, why make a huge deal out of it?

To me, the whole row smacks of jealousy, fear and resentment by Arab journalists, and the wider Arab population. I think it's very difficult for them to accept something like 7Days, because they have been working under such strictures themselves. They are searching on a day by day basis to be offended by something, because it's the new craze. They want to find something to reassure themselves that the west is foul and offensive and corrupt, because otherwise they may have to confront the fact that they have been brought up their entire lives in a brainwashed lie.

Regarding the presidents' words: I see two points. Firstly that people in this region are forced/brainwashed/oppressed into a state of mind where they do not even question their leaders, let alone criticise. It's illegal under most publication laws to criticise leaders. That said, I don't think 7Days presented Khalifa's views in a negative way, there is no spin whatsoever in that article to make him sound unfair or absurd. It's reported fairly straight, and includes Khalifa's (very sensible) concerns about raising education standards here.

Secondly, there is no such thing as a "migrating worker" as compared to a "temporary worker". Al Ka'abi and others have come out time and time again to tell us that all expats are temporary here, the system is not designed to give people permanent residential rights (even if they buy property).

Keef said...

What onearth is going on here! I read the 'offending' article and didn't see a single thing in it that could be considered offensive - we all know very well that the UAE has a massive demographic problem that needs to be solved. The 7Days article expressed no opinion about that.

And thanks to DG for the background. I had also seen the bitch school article and the apology a few days later: for the life of me I could not fill in the blanks in 'b***h'. I have a fairly extensive knowledge of English rude words, and I'm sorry but bitch is not one of them.

Emiratis demand to be respected eh? I cannot wait to get out if here.

For most of you that have no religion and just live to eat, drink, party and make money, it's another similar case of the prophet cartoon which is no big deal.

It's something most of you won't understand, because you people are too busy with this world that will come to an end.

Seabee said...

Just a simple question from me. The 'journalist' who wrote the article was fired. What about the Editor being held responsible too?

It's the usual response these days- take no responsibility, fire a junior and hope that solves the problem.

Oh there we go. Bring religion into your anti-western whingeing. If you can't win an argument, or you just don't understand, play the Islam-card. That way anyone disagreeing with you can can be accusing of "insulting Islam".

I am a proof..Along with many of my fellow Iraqis who tried to seek shelter from all the blood shed brought to us by people who have not one slight problem getting to UAE. We tried to come to build with you your country not to destroy it or ruin your "Arabic" traditions.

Again, probably as a normal citizen you would not know what I am talking about but know that your system has sentenced me and others by death just because we caryy Iraqi passports, not british, not American not Indian..etc.

7Days must have learned its lessons by now. But I want the Arabic dailies to drag on this issue a little more. Why? Maybe some of the expats have felt that its them who are calling the shots here. Posting stuff on blogs doesn't mean that you are important in the real world. So 'fellow atheist' just know that its only on blogs that you open your big mouth. Locals have close to zero presence in the blogosphere. That doesnt mean you own the country.

I hope this sets in place some of the misconceptions that a few expats have about this place.

Just because someone doesn't follow a religion it doesn't mean anything at all; it's presumptuous to assume every single atheist goes around drinking, partying and sleeping with men/women. Even though you said 'most' I still have to challenge you; how exactly can you tell if someone is an atheist or not? and how can you prove, regardless of someone's public actions and beliefs that someone is religious.

@Secret Dubai.You dissapointed me

You cannot sum it all as u did. The Arabic daily newspapers might be jealous but it does really work this way and the remaining of ur 1st paragraph doesnt make sense.

and No, the reason for the ranting was because 7days altered what Sheikh Khalif has said after a day of the bitchy article. They didnt substitute migrant with temporary or the other way around. They made it look as if he said things he never said.

Although I personally dont understand the fuz only because 7days manipulated what Khalifa have said, I do approve the campigion against 7days for many other reasons.

Anyway, if 7days didnt have a black history no one would pay attention even if it did manipulate what our president have said.

If you believe in freedom of speech and freedom of the press, then you also believe that a newspaper has the right to publish whatever it wants to.

This freedom, however, demands that the media outlet examine and vet what it publishes within the context of responsible journalism and ethics: if someone publishes something about a person that is not true, the aggrieved party should have the right to seek redress under libel/slander statutes. Further, if it can be proven that the publication willfully published something to harm an individual, then the publication should be subject to a defamation of character suit.

The question here (as suggested by some) is not whether 7 Days attempted to defame, libel, or slander the President -- clearly, it did not. The question should be whether or not 7 Days provided an accurate translation of his statements. If not, the almost universal practice by most media outlets is the printing of a retraction "We were wrong, we're sorry, we have standards, blah, blah..."

The issue in and of itself is simply bullshit -- the really interesting dynamic is the manner in which people have been reacting to it. I've lived in this country for six years now and the one thing that never ceases to amaze me is the sheer number of morons who find "insults" where none were actually offered.

(And sorry about the cursing, Sammy -- I know how you feel about profanity but sometimes it's warranted).

To a person like you, every muslim is brain washed because we don't question alot of things in our religion.
So I don't think this whole stupid statment you made is valid, it does apply to some, but not most of us. We like our rulers, we question them, we respect them, we don't make funny cartoons out of them, we have manners. that doesnt make us brainwashed or doesn't make it "no freedom of speech". Would it make you happy if we made fun of our rulers like the American do about Bush? I bet it would.
What 7 days did was published a false article, for them to be stupid enough not to be careful and translate it well doesn't make it less singnificant. When you are quoting a president, you quote the exact words, and make sure that the translation is as close as the Arabic version. This is a newspaper published in Dubai, so it has to be more careful.
Second that Russian, meaningless article has no place here, I don't call this bravery SD I call it shear lack of respect to the UAE community. We don't want to loose all our inhibition to catch up with the west. We don't want to normalize the F word or other things you think we are uptight about. This is our country and our culture. We understand the difference between your country and ours, doesnt make any better than the other. What upset us doesn't necessarily upset you or Keefieboy or i bobo or the rest of the unhappy expat whiners who are unappreciative of anything. AT the end of the day, we as locals have the right to complain at what we percieve as offensive and not acceptable.
And yes Keefie boy, you are right "all expats here know that they are are only tolerated here as long as they do work. " its true here and everywhere.
I seriously believe this blog should be renamed to "the UAE expat community blog" Ahmad is right.

LocalExpat said...

It is unacceptable for both locals and expats to defame and insult one another.
However, when you have an entire segment of the population(lets take all the construction workers for an example) being striped of their basic rights ( Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 24:just to list one of them), this is the least thing you would expect to happen.

Article 24

Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html

i, Bobo said...

"or i bobo or the rest of the unhappy expat whiners who are unappreciative of anything."

I'm neither unhappy nor unappreciative -- I am, however, interested in the equal application of the universal declaration human rights, rights that are regularly denied here under the guise of "protecting culture."

I would be just as concerned about these issues if I were speaking about environmental issues, or racism, or foreign adventurism in the United States, how Muslims are poorly treated in parts of Europe, or the plight of subcon workers in the Middle East.

People sometimes view political activism as a direct threat to their culture and really it's not -- particularly in this case. Is it possible that you see this as not so much an attack on your culture or your religion but more as an attack on the status quo? Is it possible that you feel that your privileged place in this society is in jeopardy and that as a result this somehow fosters a sense of insecurity with regard to the future? Could this somehow motivate rather snobbish statements like "you have to respect the locals and the law, if that's too difficult for you, you can always pack up and go back to your rat hole?"

Your society is undergoing a significant and difficult paradigm shift because 1) your leadership has chosen to develop a second economy not based on oil, and 2) they've decided to embrace the world economy by joining the WTO. All of that will radically impact not only the way the Emirates does business but how its society functions as well. It's just a basic dynamic of societal change -- you cannot introduce outside concepts without these concepts altering the structure of that society.

Lo and behold - my little experiment works. You see, HotLemon&Hatred, I didn't use the word muslim ANYWHERE in my original post. I used the word "Arab", deliberately to stop some brainwashed moron such as yourself playing the Islam-card. Though I had a sneaking feeling someone would try it anyway, and lo and behold you did. So that makes you no better than 7Days does it? You've deliberately misinterpreted and twisted my words and accused me of saying something I never did.

As for you suggestions on renaming this blog, since you've deliberately opted not to be a member here, and to have your blog removed from the rolls, I suggest you stfu and take your whingeing elsewhere. I know I'm not the only one who would be thoroughly glad to see the back of you.

I used the word "Arab", deliberately to stop some brainwashed moron such as yourself playing the Islam-card." Mind your language SD. And stop playing the innocent game. Read my post again after washing your face and trying commenting without using your ugly boring words.
I said "To a person like you, every muslim is brain washed because we don't question alot of things in our religion. ", if have something we respect you automatically call it "brainwashed". I then explained you "intelligent" english woman, that we respect our rulers, we realize their faults but don't go around making fun of them or making up rumours about them or draw funny cartoons to express our freedom of speach that you bore us with.
Don't get carried away with your anger and rage that blinds you many times. You are one hypcorite to talk about your boring freedom of speach campaign and ask me not to post while I am a UAE citizen like it or not. and since this blog talks about issues pertaining to MY country, I will continue to comment when I see these reidiculous comments.
Funny you add the hatered part to my nick, when it comes to psychiatry my dear, this is called PROJECTION. Take it easy and be a little more rational and wait until you sober. I know its satruday morning.

As for the second half of your pathetic response "since you've deliberately opted not to be a member here, and to have your blog removed from the rolls, I know I'm not the only one who would be thoroughly glad to see the back of you." I explained why I chose to remove my name from this UAE loving blog and don't need to explain it again. And for " I suggest you stfu and take your whingeing elsewhere." there goes your "freedom of speach talk down the drain.
Doesnt take much to get your racist, hypocrite brain to fume. Just continue to show your true colours SD. And I am sure many would like to see the hunched back of you leave MY country.
Hopefully you will grow up soon.

And as Ahmad said, this is a blog, don't get too excited about it.

"Is it possible that you feel that your privileged place in this society is in jeopardy and that as a result this somehow fosters a sense of insecurity with regard to the future?"

It could be that to some, but what concerns me more is that the UAE becomes a bland country that has no culture. People who come here don't understand that religion is an important thing to the people here. Stop reminding us of those men in "dishdash" who drink or go seeking prostitutes, they are men, but you don't get see those who don't, who have values that we kept for generations, who hold on to their religion.
Everyday the UAE people live a cultural shock while they live in their own country. Its difficult for you guys to see that, but the speed is so fast, it almost feel like we are being ripped of our identity and taking on someone elses that we are not comfortable with.
This is not even the topic.

But thanks i bobo to for making a more civilized comment thats rational.

Really just shut up and think for a while before you go on insulting people. I have seen you call people names for no reason whatsoever other than expressing their opinion. What is pathetic is that your counter arguments have become so weak and empty that you now have to resort to inventing words to use against people, and use logic that only befits a pseudo-intellect like yourself.

The net has an abundance of pseudo intellects like you and that’s not something new. What sad here is that you speak as if you know, when clearly all you want to be is a western pet in an eastern society, or an eastern “uncle tom” ready to bow to anything that speaks Latin and looks white. Disgusting….

Back to the name calling, I would advise you to consider these new rules:

[1] If you ever feel the need to invent names to get at someone, then get a life….
[2] If you really feel like licking someone’s boots, make sure they are wearing boot and you know how to find their feet…
[3] If you don’t have anything useful to say then shut up, and if you do then just keep a ‘secret’ and let the rest of us be…
[4] If you watch a certain president invent names to define something, don’t stupidly follow the idiot and do the same just refer to number [1] and get a life….
[5] if you are a pseudo-intellect and you know it, pull on your leash.

No where else have I seen a group of people expect another group of people to take insults, have their ethnicity degraded and their religious beliefs mocked and if anyone dares to speak out then either they are:

[1] fasco-islamist
[2] islamo-fascist
[3] Just plain ignorant and not worthy of proper debate nor respect.

For example, how many would dare to make some of the racist and narrow minded statements we have seen here…examples:

[1] You people…
[2] I said Arabs not Muslims!! [as if there is really a difference when put in context, and if you are not sure substitute these words as you see fit (Jews, Israelis), (Blacks, African Americans), (Natives, Red Indians)…
[3] They are not used....
