News Flash: RUMSFELD RESIGNS!

In response to the overwhelming Republican defeat in yesterday's midterm elections, United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has resigned (or been dumped) from office.

Former CIA Director Robert Gates has been nominated to replace him.

Which raises any number of questions:

Does this indicate a shift in US policy in Iraq?

Does this mean the insurgency is winning?

In the long run will this matter?

Yes, I think it's the beginning of the end. All of the military papers this week were calling for Rumsfeld to be axed. The Dems have control of the House and may or may not control the Senate (waiting on VA). The new Speaker is a woman, (3rd in line, btw, so if anything happens to Bush/Cheney...)and Hilary stomped all over her competition in NY. Let's hope this is a real shake up.

Whether Rumsfield stays or goes, whether democrats or republicans win, the true winner is Israel. So nothing is going to change in the Middle East.

Heres what AIPAC's briefing for Nov 8 has to say:

AIPAC reached nearly every lawmaker elected in Tuesday’s mid-term congressional elections as part of its effort to 'educate'* political candidates on the value of the U.S.-Israel relationship. During the campaign that ended Tuesday, nearly every viable candidate met with AIPAC professional staff members and submitted a position paper summarizing his or her views on U.S. Middle East policy. A non-partisan organization, AIPAC has for decades worked with Republican and Democratic members of Congress to strengthen the ties between the United States and Israel.

Of course we know what they mean by educate. Remind them that the zionist dollars they donated weren't for their pretty faces.

As for change on the policy in Iraq and the war on terror, dont expect much. Democrats are a loose pack with varying opinions. What you can expect is a zoo.

Ahmed: has it ever occurred to the Arabs to do something similar to what Israel is doing in the US? P.S. don't send guys with long beards.

I think you are right Ahmed - I am not sure if it's the Democrats or AIPAC who's come into power? I am also not sure if it's Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer & gang who are going to do the "talking" as the house speaker?

Yeah Marwan right - gotta learn to play the game.

As I said in my post last month, they've been planning to 'declare victory and withdraw' for a while now. Rumsfeld's sacking won't affect that, it'll just be presented as part of the 'new direction' Bush is jabbering on about.

Rumsfeld obviously had to go for breathtaking incompetence, but that wasn't the reason he went. Bush and his gang are all talking about Rummy being a 'lightning rod' for criticism - it's just a political move, not a 'you're fired because you're useless' move.

While it's a relief to see him go it's far too late, the damage is already done.

Agreed.
