Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? - The Remake, Sad Ending

Link to the original.

Image hosting by Photobucket

Genre: Comedy / Drama (more)

Tagline: a love story of today. Unlike the original, the remake has a tragic ending.

Plot Outline: Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn play a couple whose attitudes are challenged when their daughter brings home a fiance who is Arab. In the remake, the Spencer Tracy character (Hillary Clinton in the remake) does not overcome her prejudices against her daughter marrying someone from another culture.

Cast overview, first billed only:

Spencer Tracy.... Hillary Clinton
Sidney Poitier .... His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai
Katharine Hepburn .... George W. Bush
Katharine Houghton .... Bill Clinton
Monsignor Ryan .... Senator John Warner

Runtime: Less than 45 days

Country: USA with some scenes in the UAE

Language: English with Arabic subtext

Color: Color (Technicolor)

Sound Mix: Mono

"Trivia: Due to Spencer Tracy's health, the cast was always working from two shooting scripts, one with Tracy, one without. Typically, Katharine Hepburn brought Tracy in the morning, they worked until she decided he was too tired, then Tracy and Hepburn left. Sidney Poitier, who already had received a Best Actor Oscar for Lilies of the Field (1963), was intimidated by working with two legends, and preferred to perform to empty high backed chairs."

john lee,

Your comment displays several layers of ignorance and falsehoods. I agree we need to wait and see before we really know what separate ownership will mean.

But if you want to convince me its all a trick, don't send me to a link that links an AP story run by the Boston Globe and many other US papers that refers to the UAR instead of the UAE. The United Arab Republic is not what we're talking about.

And by the way, once I get past the typo in the headline I find this statement: "Details of the surprise deal were still being worked out. The company said its decision was "based on an understanding that DP World will have time to affect the transfer in an orderly fashion and that DP World will not suffer economic loss."

"DP World finalized its $6.8 billion purchase earlier Thursday of Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co., the British firm that through a U.S. subsidiary runs important operations in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia."

You don't expect them to disentangle the assets over night do you? Would you buy something that wasn't properly defined? And do you expect to sell them at fire sale prices?

You can expect all those things if you want the U.S. to shoot itself in the foot again and again and again. If the U.S. has had a change of heart about being open to foreign ownership of ports, it should have the decency to behave in a business like fashion. You seem to expect Dubai to act like Uncle Tom and apologize to the master for not anticipating the master's own indecision.

Great, that will raise the stature of the U.S. on the world stage. Not.

For what it's worth and for all those blocked from seeing it, here's what the link provided by John Lee says - and it's from Iris.org (Information Regrading Israel's Security) based in Israel:

********
Update (March 10): While the MSM is unanimously running with the story that the deal is over, Dubai is sending out mixed messages, such as this story threatening "hitting back hard" if the port deal is blocked.

There is news that the Dubai Ports firm is giving up its attempt to take over US ports by turning over control completely to an American firm:

Dubai Company to Transfer U.S. Ports to American Company However, the stories admit that:

It was not immediately clear how the divesture would be handled or what U.S. company would take over the operation.

One article, however, quotes a statement that "we will continue to hold our U.S. operations separate while this process continues." In other words, the Dubai corporation will maintain a separate incorporation status for the American subsidiary. A few comments:

-This is a standard legal fiction for corporations who maintain complete operational control over their foreign subsidiaries. As an Information Technology consultant to many multi-national corporations, I can say with certainty that corporate management has access to the information systems of local subsidiaries.

-Note the key word "continue." This strongly implies that there is no change. In other words, there is no news here.

-While it is possible that the government-owned firm will indeed be forced to sell, it should be noted that all Arab governments routinely lie. Remember when the Palestinians renounced terrorism? Here is this week's biggest example.

In any case, this popular uprising is, as I predicted two weeks ago, a Harriet Miers reprise and a victory for an Army of Davids.
********

As John Chilton says, until they get that it's the UAE not the UAR, it's an insult to the UAE and to DP World. After all the reporting that has taken place on the subject in the last few weeks, you'd think that they'd get it right.

fawzi in ajman

Read my post again - I DID NOT say that all Arab governments lie.

I DID NOT write this - I was quoting another writer's words from another website that was mentioned by earlier commenters.

Please read the posts carefully before going off into an overexcited diatribe.

If UAE eat-a-salad users cannot see the link from the words "routinely lie", it's a link to the website www.islamreview.com

I wasn't aware that this was blocked in the UAE.

fawzi. Shutup. kthx.

Please READ other peoples comments, and actually utilize the IQ I know you have to notice exactly what is being said and exactly who is saying it.

fawzi - you are either stupid, or you are a deliberate troll.

This is not the place for either.

If your English comprehension isn't good enough to follow what is being said here, then try clicking the link to the Arabic UAE community blog.

You don't seem to understand the concept of a quote, and I frankly have no patience for your ilk around here.

Either shut up and learn something, or go away. Future such comments from you will be deleted as they disrupt the flow of genuine debate.

YOU DO REALISE THAT NZM WAS QUOTING A NEWS ARTICLE. AS NZM HAS ALREADY SAID.

I'm pretty sure it'd come as a surprise to no-one that all governments lie, arab or not.
