First it was the Gang-Rape victim…

Now it’s a brutally abused house maid. Can someone please tell me what’s up with the ten thousand and one dirham temporary compensation?

because one dirham can buy a can of pepsi.

It's almost as insult, probably something to do with a minimum amount or something.

Or because it's like "it's only ten thousand dirhams, what the fuck?", but now it's like "it's ten thousand and one dirhams, because you're worth it."

As discussed in the comments section of this post in John Chilton's blog, it's something that is more prevalent in Hindu society.

It must be catching on for the Muslim world too - or maybe it was first invented here.

It's a symbolic thing, I am not sure what it represents, but it could be something to do with a scale of damages. Eg the highest bracket might be "Ten thousand dirhams and above"

The maid claiming the compensation is from Bangladesh, so maybe it's also common practise there.

But the gamg-rape victim was British, I think?!

yes.

It is just temporary compensation, not a final amount, it probably covers lawyer fees, psychological counselling or whatever else.
